It's a continuity error which was never explained. You want to tell me that after years of showings that he can breath in space, one showing can discard it. Lulz, go ahead and see how many besides carvy agree with you. Well surfer getting armbarred and firelord getting ktfo by spidey are also canon, are they usable?
I am saying according to different writers it changes. That and it's canon deal with it. 🙂

Wasn't he recently unable to breathe in space against Luthor in space ?

So I heard.

I know he flat out didn't need to breath during the Kryptonite X powerup just after his rebirth, but as far as I've seen he generally survives in space on a deep breath, or requires a breathing device for deep space travel. Mongul's training during the Imperiex Saga even included improving his ability to hold his breath.

I agree he needs to hold his breath at certain times which makes sense to me.

Not really, name one writer other than cornell who wrote superman unable to breath in space in recent years.

He taught superman how to breath in space, not hold his breath. Out of canon anyhow, superboy in adventure comics was shown breathing in space.

Didn't Superman state a while back that flight aided in him lifting objects? Has anything been used or stated against his statement to make you think otherwise?

This was a Byrne concept in early post crisis, and one I kind of liked.

Basically, his ability to fly was done via some kind of aura, which he extends around objects when he carries them in flight. He was even shackled down on an alien space ship, and managed to fly it around and overpower it's propulsion systems.

This also tied into Byrne's assertion that Supermans powers are psionically based, to a point. That's why Dreadnaut and Psi Phon were able to "steal" his powers, with Psi Phon switching off the part of his brain that controls each power, and copying it into Dreadnaut who duplicated the power, making it look like it was stolen. Although, Byrne also had them switch off powers in Captain Marvel, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter, which was a pretty bad stretch imo.. There's no way Captain Marvel should lose his durability by switching off a certain part of his brain.

I don't think any other writer followed up on that, but it's a shame because it was a cool concept. (And could have easily lead to a much more overpowered Superman to this day, if his mind was established to control his power level..)

That doesn't make it any less canon. I don't pay attention and didn't even know that writer's name. Once something becomes canon it's added to his history.

Look, I didn't want to argue that it takes precedence only that it is indeed canon. You mistake people's intentions all the time.

The language was kind of weird. "If it were not for my training, you would not even be able to breath this far out into space.

Space is space, why would distance matter? I think Loeb meant he wouldn't be able to hold his breath that far into space...

And besides, it's impossible to breath in a vacuum..

I'd love to see when Superboy did it though.

Lulz at this interpretation of a fact directly stated in a comic. Mongul trained superman to breath in space and since then every kryptonian even power girl is shown without a mask in space and talking in space like infinite crisis 7. Let me guess they were talking in space holding their breath, right? Adventure comics annual 1 IIRC.

They talk with sub frequency communicators.

Re read the mongul training story.

And I hope you're not seriously arguing anyone could breath in space.
