This was a Byrne concept in early post crisis, and one I kind of liked.
Basically, his ability to fly was done via some kind of aura, which he extends around objects when he carries them in flight. He was even shackled down on an alien space ship, and managed to fly it around and overpower it's propulsion systems.
This also tied into Byrne's assertion that Supermans powers are psionically based, to a point. That's why Dreadnaut and Psi Phon were able to "steal" his powers, with Psi Phon switching off the part of his brain that controls each power, and copying it into Dreadnaut who duplicated the power, making it look like it was stolen. Although, Byrne also had them switch off powers in Captain Marvel, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter, which was a pretty bad stretch imo.. There's no way Captain Marvel should lose his durability by switching off a certain part of his brain.
I don't think any other writer followed up on that, but it's a shame because it was a cool concept. (And could have easily lead to a much more overpowered Superman to this day, if his mind was established to control his power level..)
