Galen did lower his defenses to save the rebels according to the novel. That's made clear.

So an argument can be made that the result of the final confrontation could have been different if Galen wasn't trying to protect the rebels.

Obviously. But Arhael seems to imply that Marek could have overcome Palpatine, which is a losing argument.

That's sounds contradictory.
On his quote "result of the final confrontation could have been different" you say "obviously", which means you agree that, if not sacrifice, different result with Marek winning is possible. Then you say that implication that Marek could have overcome Palpatine is a losing argument.

These are my quotes:

If he did not decide to sacrifice himself, there is a chance that he would have won.

Indeed, there was small chance to win.

I merely stated that, if not sacrifice, Marek would have a chance to win. And I admit that odds are on Palpatine's side, thus chance was very small.
