Not really. Most of their games aren't great.
I was speaking purely in terms of story. Obsidian games may be buggy and have broken gameplay, but the story is usually a cut above the rest. New Vagas, Kotor 2, Mask of the Betrayer and Alpha Protocol all have top-notch stories.

New Vegas is an exception.
I only played that game for about 4 hours... Addmitedly, I was never a fan of Fallout 3. Yes, I know; I'm a bad person.

I can't think of a bad Obsidian game off of the top of my head. Can you elaborate?
Alpha Protocol was pretty bad, as was that Dungeon game that came out last year. But I'm not saying all their games are bad just not great and certainly not on par with Mass Effect.

To be fair, KotOR II's darker atmosphere and morally grey storyline felt more mature than KotOR I's. The cool thing about one was the novelty and the You are Revan twist, but other than that it was fairly generic hero storyline.KotOR II almost felt phyrric in the end.

The great thing about video games is that simple, generic storylines can be much more effective than they usually are by exploiting power fantasies. You are Revan! You are saving the Galaxy! You are a badass who walks through sith like water! Raaaargh!
That story wouldn't be nearly as good in a novel.
But a more mature story will always appeal to me more than that personally.

Hardly. If Bioware creates a shitty ending they get death threats.
If by death threats you mean words on the internet and cupcakes then yes, death threats.
And to be fair that wasn't BioWare. The ending was mainly done by Casey Hudson and it's actually an achievement to take something so epic like Mass Effect and ruin it to the point where you have to give out free DLC.
