Bungie's track-record of making very solid shooters shows through in this game, but they need to work on thinking outside of that shooter box. Not only are the special abilities too generic in look and function, but even the weapons are very by the numbers.
I mean, this is supposed to be some pretty hardcore sci-fi/fantasy, yet every gun is more or less the same old tacticool modern warfare stuff we in every shooter. Point it at something, pull the trigger, it shoots some kind of bullet or energy bullet in a straight line.
I feel like they have a very great opportunity to be creative and come up with some fun, quirky stuff for both the weapons and the abilities. Stuff like the gravity gun, or even the Chainsaw bayonet (frequently held up as an example of gamer immaturity, but **** that- that thing was fun as **** to use from game 1 to game 4).
As it currently stands, I find myself looking upon the enemies' guns and their little homing bullets with envy- though even those guns are rather repetitive (the fodder have smaller guns that shoot bullets that track you- the boss units have larger guns that shoot larger bullets that track you). I mean, didn't they come up with the needler like 10 years ago? They could do better.
The game doesn't have nearly enough content or polish to warrant a day 1 release from me, but I see lots of potential for it to be great in the future- perhaps after a couple years of additional content.
