You mean grandmaster chess players, or the general public chess enthusiast? Beating something like Chessmaster isn't saying much, because that program is designed to be a trainer for human beings, not tear them to shreds...
Against the strongest chess engines, grandmasters struggle for the draw now.
The only time a human really has a shot of winning against a serious engine, is in an "odds" match, or a handicap match.
