"Believe me, I have been attacked by militant feminists since I got on Twitter. That's something I'm used to," Whedon said in an interview with BuzzFeed News on Tuesday. "I saw a lot of people say, ‘well, the social justice warriors destroyed one of their own!' It's like, Nope. That didn't happen." The real reason for his departure, he said, was his return to writing after a frustrating creative process and his need to shut out the noise of Twitter in order to do so. "I just thought, 'wait a minute, if I'm going to start writing again, I have to go to the quiet place — and this is the least quiet place I've ever been in my life."...
Certainly some of that hate has emanated from feminist sources in recent days. Whedon noted as much, telling BuzzFeed News that by supporting feminist causes, feminism became the barometer for all he did to some people. "If you don't live up to the litmus test of feminism in this one instance, then you're a misogynist," he said. But while his newest movie took criticism from notable feminist sources, Whedon said the comments were nothing to make him question his safety, and nothing close to the torrent of abuse feminists such as his friend Anita Sarkeesian have received.
I'm so glad Whedon says the same thing, the criticism he received is nothing like the harassment that feminists complain about. I'm sure it's frustrating and annoying, but there's no real threat coming from it. Neither is it a coordinated effort to harass him.
Also very interesting, follow up article about his frustration with Marvel:

Well there was no Feminist machine attack on Whedon, but there were quite a few people that were unhappy with the character development of Black Widow and in particular a scene about her past and having been sterilized, which imo wasn't very well done anyways. Additionally there was a rape joke that some (not necessarily the same) people found distasteful. And well I guess generally there's been a lot of people that didn't like AoU and just voiced that opinion at him.

Quite a few angry feminist can equate to a Feminist Attack Macine. eg like one guy breaking and looting is just one guy, get 32 of them together and it's a mob.
That "I can't have babies" scene while not very good, I see nothing anti-woman about it. Did those idiots even pay attention? See was sterilized basically against her will, having been brainwashed to be a soldier/assassin.
"Prima Nocta" = rape joke? Good lord, but okay.

I suppose it can, it just didn't to to Whedon, as he publicly stated.
Why would he publicly admit that? To get more hate from feminists and the PC crowd?
Of coarse he wont out right say it or admit it. He doesnt want to attract anymore hate from these types.
Its not difficult to see whats going on here.

Nah, Whedon is obviously being genuine. He addresses the "hate" he's gotten directly, and explains how it's just not the same as other much more severe online harassment that people like Anita Sarkeesian have gotten. He also gave his reason for why he left twitter. You shouldn't just disregard the words of the person affected just because you like your incorrect pet theory more.

And you shouldn't be so naive on a matter that really isn't that hard to understand.
I guess we should all start believing 100% what celebs say publicly after being lashed out at, that is most likely written out by a PR person for them.
Whedon could be in fact genuine, but still not say out right , " Hey folks I took down my twitter cause i was sick or reading all these angry comments from these sjw idiots and dumb women"

It wasn't a particular Feminist Group but a bunch of SJW's who trolled & pretended to be offended by Whedon. Half of the trolls were males pretending to be angry feminists.
I'm sure there were quite a few trolls. But a lot of this "hate" was really just people finding something they disliked and tweeting about it at him. Which, because there are so many, is of course a torrent of tweets and can feel overwhelming (similar to what Rob said), but it wasn't an organised effort to attack him and make him feel unsafe. Like there were few, if any "I'm gonna kill you, you piece of shit, I know where you live" and many "**** you, you ruined my favourite character, I won't watch anything you make ever again", which is just a completely different level.
Additionally, over blaming feminists for his move away from twitter the media and people hide his real reasons for doing so, as well as his dissatisfaction with Marvel about the film, which is actually the much more interesting and true story.
