Current Gen Console Discussions (PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch (Pro?) OFFICIAL THREAD

Jesus...maybe not a big deal for a few...but Total Warhammer 3 is going to be on Game Pass in Feb 24th....7 days after the release date on Steam.

In the last month, I have played

Subnautica Below Zero
Unpacking
Riftbreakers
Back 4 Blood
Age of Empires 4

And will be playing shortly in the next month

It Takes Two
Forza Horizons 5
and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas Remastered......
Halo Infinite

Either MS is throwing serious cash or the service is bringing a ton of revenue for the publishers/developers who are releasing on it. The crazy thing is that 7 of those games are literally day 1 releases.

It's 100% the best deal in the industry. I have to assume they will charge more eventually.

I find it a big deal. Total War 3 was one of those pipe dreams I wish could get ported to console even if next gen only so I could play one day and that wish looks granted. Coming to Xbox Game Pass, chance is high a physical edition will follow even. Now if we get Baldur's Gate 3 next, oh man...

I'm not sure though.....I think it's still PC only.

I know it's only on PC and won't be on the Xbox itself Day 1 but doesn't mean it'll never be available for Series X later. That'd be weird to have a game on a service called Xbox and no one with an Xbox can ever play it on there.

Hmm, I guess....

But I would extremely surprised if Sega releases this game on a console....there has been RTS's on consoles but Total War.....I think that would be extremely hard to make it work....

Who knows though...they have Planet Coaster on console...and I would never suspected that.

There's also Stellaris on console.

Different genre though...my understanding is that games combat is fully automated. Total War is different than that....I wonder how they would work out the drag and arranged unit types and stuff like that.

But you never know...That being said....the more I think about it...its not as strange as I think considering the last Total War game (Troy) was released for free on Epic for 1 day.

So being on Game Pass very early in the release is not so strange...but anywhoo..huge get by Microsoft for the PC Game Pass.....though...I wonder how that all works with the previous entries considering they are most likely going to combine all three Warhammer games into one massive map (they did with the first two) and most people have bought the games on Steam (like me)

MS is definitely throwing a ton of cash at it right now. They're trying to increase subscriber numbers and are doing pretty much whatever it takes. It's par the course for streaming services (which Gamepass essentially is) - take a big loss early to build up a big catalogue and get a lot of attention, and get a lot of subscribers quickly, and then start scaling back the amount of money spent on the service. I think you can expect the same thing to happen with gamepass. Right now it's great, and over the next few years will continue to be great, but at some point the 3d party releases will probably slow down, especially day one releases. And it'll eventually just be MS first party games coming day 1. Which will still be a solid deal, but not quite as absurdly good as it is now.

MS is basically putting all of xbox's eggs in the gamepass basket. They see it as their future and if it continues to grow and reaches whatever their internal goal is for subscribers, they'll probably start working to release it for other platforms. I believe Specer said that the goal is to eventually get it on every single platform - swich and Playstation included. I think if they ever get to that point they may just completely stop creating hardware, and Xbox will essentially become a streaming service for multiple platforms.

But that's a long ways off, and it may never happen at all. Right now it's an amazing deal and everyone should take advantage of it. It's like Netflix was 10+ years ago. It won't last.

Went to Retro Game Expo over the weekend, say this panel from a group that wants to take digital only offerings and make them into physical copies.

Probably not gonna happen ever but wish the Xbox Live Arcade and PS3 downloadables could be made into physicals. Bangai-O Missile Fury being one example, it was pulled this past year and I barely bought it in time. Never been made backwards compatible.

Guardian Heroes is another stellar example.

For my money a way more fun brawler then Streets of Rage 4. And I can say that because I bought Streets of Rage 4.

I wish companies who made games gave more of a shit about game preservation. There is definitely going to be a lot of games lost to time because they never had physical releases and they will be removed from digital storefronts.

The main problem is license holders....for instance, No One Lives Forever, one of the best FPS to be made in the early history of shooters...and the Monolith Software still exists...but nobody knows who owns the rights...

Nightdive Studios have been running around trying to find out about NOFL.

No one lives forever games were great. Hope they can figure that shit out. Would love a third game or a remake or something.

The first Dishwasher is another one lost to time.

From the makers of Salt and Sanctuary.

Second is on Steam, first was an Xbox 360 exclusive.

If only literally every Xbox game in existence can be backward compatible on each new Xbox console. Look at Wii U, I've yet to see a game for original Wii that wasn't compatible with that for example. Meanwhile Microsoft and others talk about licenses and how they can't give every classic a 1080 upgrade that I dunno if anyone asked for. Point is the original publishers of these old games put them on Xbox, it's on Xbox whether the current/no-existant owners like that fact or not. I doubt they'll give Evil Dead: Fist Full of Boomstick, Mace Griffin, Star Wars Episode III The Game, Area 51, etc. a rerelease let alone some definitive edition turbo remaster so just let people play 'em if they got 'em.

Sad how these current consoles will never have cool cheat devices like Action Replay, Game Shark, and Code Breaker. The video game companies are no fun allowed and refuse to have people cheat on the video games.

One issue with licenses is sometimes its unclear who actually owns them anymore. For old games, like NOFL, those companies don't exist and nobody really knows who owned them.

And...its a license issue..but also Xbox 360 to Xbox One is done through emulation. I believe work needed to be done in order to get it working.

Also...we have no idea how licensing worked with all these consoles...for instance, maybe the license was only allowed to be used on an Xbox 360.

Not saying much but Microsoft's at least trying with older game availability more than the competition. Nintendo now has older games held hostage behind a bad online service or time limited bundle releases to create scarcity, while Jim Ryan over at Sony says we don't need those ancient games.

So, do modern console controllers still do that annoying thing where when the battery is down to half charge they flash constantly?

I ended up putting tape over the lights because of that.

I used to assume people like that were stupid, but honestly I just think he's lying.

You made me realise it's been months since I used a controller, so I don't know.
