I like her, even if her Tropes vs. Women is pretty basic so far.

[edit] Oh you meant the sexist bullshit, nevermind

Well, based on statistics, is it an extreme result to not have games with a female protagonist at E3?

Percentage of games with a male lead: 92% or .92

16 games revealed (big ones).

.92^16 = 0.26

Is .26 < .05?

No.

Conclusion: it is not extreme that all 16 games would have only male leads.

Her complaint fails. 😆

Anita isn't insane; she is a genius. How many of you can say that you had over $150k fed to you so you can beat a dead horse and make mediocre videos that thousands do without any kind of recompense or recognition? Yeah, thought so.

She didn't say anything about it being an extreme or in any way uncommon result. She expressed her disappointment at Microsoft continuing the trend.

However if you compare it to the percentage of gamers that are women which could be catered to with protagonists they can identify with (disregarding that studies show women can identify with male leads while men, cause they ain't no sissies, bro, can't with female leads), which is somewhere in the high 40s, it is a pretty extreme result.

To be fair she only asked for a more reasonable 6000$, perhaps you can claim that she was able to promote it very well, or take advantage of the immense backlash she received for her project.

Agreed: she's a marketing genius.

The Feminist White Knights and Feminists flocked to this kickstarter program because it actually was done by a person with a decent video camera, video production acumen, and by a person that knows a bit about pop-culture and science.

This makes me think that I could do a kickstarter program doing something similar and make even more money because I don't sound nearly as boring, am better at editing (seriously, that was some very very basic editing), and like to argue.

Now all I need is an excellent video camera. Anyone have a production quality HD Camera? I'll use the money to "fund" my research of "hundreds" of video games. 😐

I disagree: she was shocked at there being 0 games with a female lead.

We must then calculate whether or not the 0 is an unusual result (because it does not exceed the rule of thumb by being a probability of less than .05). It wasn't, so she shouldn't be expressing shock, via sarcasm, regarding that.

I think you messed up in logic, here. If females can identify with both male and female leads but males identify more with male leads, then you add your preferences for each gender to figure out which lead is the better choice as a producer. Since there is a significantly greater preference for the male lead role (because women can identify with both male and female and males with only males), you'll have a higher preference, overall, for male lead rolls.

Your point would be true if and only if the results showed the opposite.

You're right: that goal of $6000 is much more reasonable than what she got. I would say that $600 is more on target only if you assume she already has the hardware (the camera and computer to do the editing) and does not have to pay a cameraman and/or editor.

If you tell me what thread is appropriate and reply there I'll check it.

I don't think there is a thread for this, but I'll give you my reasoning in short form, and then I'll refrain from mentioning it again so as not to derail.

In short, Anita subscribes to patriarchy theory, the theory that men run the system to benefit men at the expense of women, as if there's a council of men who want to keep them down, and do so maliciously, that runs the world. I'm oversimplifying it there, but you get why that would irk me. She also looks for sexism where there often either isn't, or it's not to be taken seriously.

Her attacks on games can be dismissed largely with
1. Games companies want money, they make what sells with no political agenda.
2. Many of the games she complains about do have strong female characters in them.
3. She ignores when the shoe is on the other foot. Like the Double Dragon HD game she brings up where 'this regressive crap happens again'. Wanna know how that game ends? The kidnapped damsel DESTROYS a man with an earth shattering punch to the balls.

She's also attacked the work of Lauren Faust. An episode of Powerpuff Girls called Equal Fights was written by Mrs. Faust, and contained a caricature of radical feminists as a villain. Faust is a femnist herself, but her work seems to acknowledge female privilege rather than writing it off so other feminists attack her fairly often. It rustles my jimmies to be honest.

So, not a fan of Ms. Sarkeesian, or feminism in general, though I respect some feminists who take the time to be reasonable and desire equality. I'm personally an egalitarian. Patriarchy theory wads up my undies so hard, though.

And yes, this was the short version.

After reading this....I want the long version. 😐

Your premise is flawed. She spends her time making youtube videos about how women are portrayed in video games, one of her complaints is that there are very few female leads. She wasn't shocked, it wouldn't make sense, and her tweet does not insinuate it at all.

I said disregarding that fact. However of course there is also a financial argument to be made for offering a product going against the standard fare. And then there is the argument that these types of products influence the taste and sensibilities of the market, so it makes perfect sense for her to try to pressure Microsoft (and convince consumers) to use that influence they have to go in the direction she wants them to. Of course it's also not a 100% thing, not all women identify with male characters, and not all men can't identify with women, there's surely an addressable market there.

Making high quality youtube videos also costs time. Not just in shooting and editing, but especially in research and preparation. I don't see it as unreasonable of her to ask for her fans to pay her for that time if they want the product. And 6000$ doesn't seem at all unreasonable for that. However, taking Google's original channel investments of about 300 million $, with some channels getting up to 5 million $, the money she made from kickstarter isn't even that outrageous, depending on what she'll do with it in the long run.

No, your premise is flawed because she explicitly mentioned 0. The expected value was greater than 0 for her. That actually means something in science. She just did not have a good enough grasp on how science actually works to realize that a result of 0 is actually not unusual. And by unusual, I mean the actual scientific use (stats) of that word.

If she meant what you would have said, she would have employed her sarcasm different. "I am utterly shocked that there were no major games with a female lead at E3, this year. /sarcasm"

She didn't so you're interpretation is wrong.

You can do all of that research and production in your downtime, easily, and churn out high quality videos for youtube. Like I said, if she did not have the hardware or skills, $6000 is reasonable. If she did, $600 is more reasonable (to buy used video games for the rare moment she cannot get it for free).

There should be a thread about this anyways, I disagree with most of your points, but will also not derail the thread further.

She didn't say anything about expectations. It could just as well be about what she hoped for. Or what she think it should have been. Again, she knows very well that most games don't have female protagonists, so it is somewhat ridiculous to suggest she would be surprised. Your example of what the tweet could have been does not in any way say what I believe she said, i.e. that she is disappointed that there wasn't a game with a female lead.

You can, but why would you want to if people are willing to pay for what you create let them pay you, no different than any other person producing media.

Not mentioning "expected value" is not necessary for science.

Wrong: she expressed shock over the lack of any of the games have a female lead. "exactly zero games." You can interpret however you'd like: your interpretation does not change why her tweet was flawed. She should not have been shocked or upset that "exactly zero" games had a female lead. She was, she complained, she obviously did not realize her error. Like I said, she could have used sarcasm in a different way but she didn't.

She clearly expected at least 1 or more games to have a female lead regardless of her knowledge that a majority don't.

Why do them on your own budget? Mostly for moral reasons, I think. 🙂

Anyway, going back on topic, does anyone have the official release dates for both consoles?

Late 2013 is so far the closest to an exact date we have.

Well, I know that, I heard Xbox is Nov. and PS4 is "Holiday 2013". 😛 Was just wondering if they came out with new information that confirmed/gave more specific dates.

Does the Wii U play all Wii games? I'm mainly interested in Mario and Zelda. The Wii was the first Nintendo system I haven't owned. Can you get normal controllers for the Wii U? Does it have all the multi-media apps seen on X Box 360 and PS3?

I probably won't be getting the X Box One unless they loosen up with the restrictions. I own a PS1, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, X Box, Game Cube, X Box 360 and PS3 now.

Not really sure as I don't own a Wii U, googled this, tho:

Get the PS4, tons of solid exclusives and it is the overall more powerful system between the two (tho not by that much).

What is your favorite genre? Sounds like you're a big gamer. Never got that impression from you. Kewl.

We should find a game we all like and get together.

That way, I can pwn all your faces. 😈

There's no proof that she was shocked. That's really all of it, and why your reply to it doesn't work.

I don't think there's good moral reasons for producing stuff for free, as a capitalist I think it is very moral to charge for your work.

I like that that's one of the reasons I'm still sort of considering the Wii U currently, never got a Wii for example.

Similarly I am wondering what exactly Gaikai will offer on the PS3, I mean if they'd do the full library of PS3, that would be a huge win.
