Miyamoto's new IP?

Remember when you guys laughed when I said Nintendo would have a good lineup? Well, MK8 and Smash Bros both look awesome.

Sure feels good to be right.

Nintendo’s Wii U is home to some of the best titles ever to hit any of the Japanese video game giant’s consoles. Unfortunately, it’s just not enough.

Nintendo has been unable to recreate the runaway success enjoyed by its first-generation Wii, and the second model continued to flounder in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2014. The company on Wednesday reported a full-year loss of $456 million as it managed to sell only 2.7 million units of its flagship Wii U console.

For some perspective, the new PS4 and Xbox One each sold more units than that in just a few weeks following their launches in November last year.

Nintendo also noted that it sold 12 million 3DS consoles during the fiscal year, and cumulative 3DS sales are now approaching 43 million units.

The company expects to return to profit in the current fiscal year.

That is tough for Nintendo, hopefully they will turn a profit this year.

Yeah, it is tough for Nintendo. I always thought they would be in trouble if they didn't get more modern and not rely on a few big titles to save them.

The Wii was a massive success but I figured it wasn't sustainable. People who bought the Wii were not going to be another console. It was a one time deal.

Hopefully they can learn from their mistakes and continue to be around. I rather have three console companies than two. At least stop making hardware and focus on software. Their big titles would sell like crazy on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Do you think the Wii U will be their last home console?

Should they go software only?

Also, Nintendo seems to be taking online seriously with MK8. It will have online tournaments, leaderboards, and the ability to upload highlight reels to YouTube.

And it looks like they've embraced the competitive Smash community with Smash U and the invitational tournament at E3.

Nintendo needs to drop out of the console race and focus on making handhelds and software. Port their games over to Sony and Microsoft and rake in the cash.

There isn't room for three consoles anymore, anyway. Technology is becoming too homogeneous.

Do you think they'll drop out after this gen?

Do you think they should?

If it keeps them in business then yes.

Could they stay in the console business? It's not like one failure will kill them.

Do you think they should after this gen?

I'd rather they just do better on the next console.

If Nintendo is to stay in the console business...

And Mario Kart 8's roster is the most garbage thing I've had the misfortune of laying eyes on in awhile. Pink Gold Peach? Baby Rosalina? The honey queen isn't looking so bad about now.

But should they drop out?

There is talk that there won't be another console generation for any of the console maker.

Maybe Nintendo keeps in the console making business but I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo would make more money if they start selling their games on different platforms.

But would it be better for them?

If it makes them more money then yes.
