Let's remember why Sega went software only. Researching and developing a console is freaking expensive to do. That's not including the cost to produce an individual console as well. That's why people say they should go software only. The operating costs are lower and there could be a chance to sell a lot of copies of software. I would bet Mario/Zelda would sell 5-10 million more copies if it went third party. Not including how much money they would make if they start producing mobile apps using their brand.
Look at Ubisoft/EA/Activision. They are big companies making a lot of money, and they don't sell consoles. I don't know why people think Nintendo would crumble if they went software only considering their strength has always been producing top quality games.
Iwata irc gave a pretty good explanation on why he would only do it if he planned to sell the company, and only cared for short term sucess. Sure he could just be talking shit but it made sense to me and it makes sense given their business strategy and focus. Nintendo is much more resilient then sega was
And I doubt mario would sell anymore if software only. Anyone who wants it already has nintendo stuff, which is why mario kart is always the highest selling game or top 3 for them. So it'd likely sell about the same but make less money due to having to pay bs fees where as now it's all in house and they aren't losing money on their consoles even if it doesn't sell as much as they wanted.
And once again their handheld is too good to justify no hardware, shitting on the ps vita
