I'll say this, he's definitely right about Dragonball Evolution, but it's hard to be wrong about that. Even then, he couldn't go five minutes without referencing "the original manga". I mean, I get that adaptations should keep respects to source material, but it's as if he just wanted to watch DBZ all over again. The review seemed void of independence.
I definitely agree with you on the Godzilla review, because I got the same thing from his Pacific Rim review. The difference there was that he got what he wanted, hence his different tune, and of course, he has three guys there with him helping to make a simple point. The best thing any of them said was that it's basically and "anime movie." The only argument he seemed to want to make is "It's a movie about GIANT F**KING ROBOTS BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF MONSTERS, and you can't go into the theater expecting more." Why not? No, I don't expect Pacific Rim to be narratively profound, but if I somehow I did, I'm within my rights to do that. If I set a reasonable expectation for a work of art, and those expectations aren't met, I feel my criticism of the fact is fair and justified.
