Shockingly revolutionary. They'll be featuring gun toting rebel Princess characters next..! Or Queens who feature as pivotal main characters in rebellion..!!

FFS.

I dont like the way this announcement:

(A) Treats fans like they must have imagined Leia, Padme, Padme's maidens/bodyguards, Mon Mothma, The female pilots in Naboo etc

(B) Sounds like a cynical political cash in/audience grab

(C) Is reported without any other detail about the character as if the gender alone was meant to be meaningful and impactful to SW fans.

(D) Insults the general readership by thinking that they would find this somehow relevant and newsworthy in 2013.

(E) 'Female character for female character's sake' pre-merit tokenism is as cliched as insulting as a token racial appearance.
You'd think that AVP was a good film, if this was all that was needed to impress.

About your c), d), and e): which means this announcement implies sexism, imo.

They should not have announced it and just let it happen. If they would have done as you said and said that this was a female Jedi Twi'lek (been done, but bear with me) whose childhood marginally resembles Mace Windu's, it would have been noteworthy and not come off as a bit sexist.

However, I am not the least bit offended or concerned. 😄 Episode VII will be good, no matter what. Stakes are too high. We'll at least get a "7 out of 10" movie from this. No pun intended.

In all fairness, Star Wars does have a reputation for being highly male-centric, so it is a newsworthy comment.

Yes, this would be a pretty positive move for Star Wars which is full of white male (human) leads.

It's only sexist or racist if you make it out that way, who cares if there is only one black guy and basically one woman in episodes 4-6.
i'm interested in the the characters, they could be polkadotted for all i care.

No, that's not right. If the protagonist were Gungans, you'd care.

Aye and they did, by making the femaleness the only noted announcement as if it was some major thing, when there have been female protagonists all the way through.

Im with you on the rest of it.

it reeks of tokenism. sarah palin with a lightsaber.

Since it's catered to males.

Wasn't done all that great anyway with the female character, If only they did it the same way how it was done with the avp comics.

Can be a bit of a circular argument, that.

Still, regardless of the potential rights and wrongs of it, the fact remains that SW is seen as male-centric, and if the new production is trying to change that, it is newsworthy.

Initially, it seems like the lead character is female because Star Wars is male centric: something to make the male fans drool about...or something.

If she shows up on poster, with her ass towards the camera, wearing something tight, then we'll know that it was just sex-candy for the male audience.

Not really how SW has sold itself in the past. With the exception of Princess Leia in a gold bikini.

lol!

So basically, "Not really how SW has sold itself in the past except when it sold itself that way in the past." 😆

And don't forget Padme in her tight white outfit that has been cut up.

Look the exact pose I was talking about:

This is awesome:

Looks like everyone will be coming out of the woodwork with this new movie on its way

Hardly worked. AOTC was the least succesful Prequel by a mile. And ROTJ the least loved of the OT.

Lovely.

The problem with advertising Padme as an action figure is that she was far more boring in the films than those poses make out.

I agree wholeheartedly... In fact I think that goes for Natalie. She's lovely and prolly very enchanting as a person, but also quite boring. She is in most of her roles. The most exciting part she ever had was in The Professional (aka Leon).
