Marvel studios wouldn't have changed shit about him.

Not sure about that. Think they might have changed his "real" name, and given him the name "Doctor Doom" later.

Also the new Doom(and FF Origin) seems to be based on the Ultimate versions. So going by that, they're not doing anything "drastically" different from the comics from what we've seen so far.

In any case, I don't think this movie will do well, and I do believe the rights will revert to Marvel. Simply because this movie is out next month, and there's literally Zero hype for it as far as I can tell.

Marvel hasn't been ashamed to put their characters on the screen as they are. They haven't changed any names at all as far as I can remember. They have the general audience eating out of their hand and they know it. They aren't afraid to embrace the more comic booky aspects.

AHEM... "The Mandarin"... AHEM

I haven't seen return of the king or whatever it was called, but I thought they fixed the whole mandarin thing with that. The mandarin shown in IM3 was a fake anyway.

You can't "fix" it. You can't fix IM 3 being one of the worst comic book movies in history.

I'm not talking about fixing the movie, I mean fixing the mandarin.

Yeah, I know.

Kingsley needs to stay away from that role.

Ok, so FF can screw up Doom in the movie, and then just fix it with a 10minute youtube video that "hints" at the real Doom may or may not coming one day? Don't think so.

It's better than making him an internet troll who uses his screen name in real life and trying to convince people it's a good idea...

Better than making him a joke "actor"? Nah.

The difference being Doom is a far more influential and important villain than the Mandarin. Also, Marvel didn't intend for that to be the mandarin. From the very beginning it was intended to be a fake. That won't be the case with FF.

will likely be paying $5 for this either opening week or the following week

Yeah because they felt like he was a racist caricature the Mandarin, I guess he is if they were attempting to use the books from the 1960's.

That's irrelevant.

You said Marvel would never change anything about a character. I gave an example of how they clearly did.

There are other examples as well. What was with the amalgam of Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash?

Don't see how that makes it any better tbh. It just further shows they thought the real thing (as he is in the comics) wouldn't work.

Anyway, this movie is out in a month, and there's no hype at all.

It's strange, because Ra's Al Ghul and Nyssa in Arrow were frankly much more steeped in stereotypes than Mandarin has ever been, but they had no problems using them.

Go back and look at the early comics - Ras Al Ghul was never the yellow peril caricature that the Mandarin was. Ras was designed like a James Bond villain, and never had a nickname that was middle eastern cliche.

A. Its not irrelevant because they knew there would be little backlash if they made changes to a less popular character. Change whiplash, little backlash. Change Magneto, HUGE backlash. See?

B. Im still correct. Marvel did NOT change mandarin to our knowledge because the one shown in IM3 was a fake. And thats all there is to it.

A. No because Marvel's made it's whole franchise by lesser known characters.

B. Yeah because according to the Director the real Mandarin wouldn't work.

Why even use his name at all? And who says it was their intention to use the "fake" one. That was the "Mandarin" they used end of. A 10 minute youtube video trying to rectify that saying "oh there's a real Mandarin out there" doesn't change the portrayal of the character(or character's name) in that movie.

Especially given it was never marketed as "a fake Mandarin". It was simply marketed as The Mandarin. And that's what they used to entice us to the movie.

Marvel has had to use the lesser known characters. If they got something as big and well known as Magneto or Doom, they'd play it as close to the comics as possible. They gave red skull a cheap looking rubber red mask and stood by it. They make changes to the lesser villains because they have no fanbase in comparison to something like Doom. Intent can be subjective, what is FACT is that the "Mandarin" in Iron man 3 was a fake. Advertising doesn't mean shit to the final product as they pulled the wool over everyone's eyes anyway where mandarin is concerned.
