So he put the ring on to try and activate the stones power, momentarily forgetting the stone was cursed. So you see it was emotion that clouded him, not stupidity.

No, Albus didn't make him flee. The arrival of the Ministry did. We saw he didn't leave the area until the backup had arrived.
