So it would make sense that Superman has a very core loyal group of fans. The fact that MoS box office was weak and dvd sales were good simply means that the movie didn't appeal to general audiences but the loyal core group of superman fans still went out and bought dvds. Now, is that a sign that MoS is more loved than IM3? **** no it's not. An example is firefly, a crapload of really loyal passionate fans bought the dvds but when the movie Serenity was finally made the GA didn't give a shit. DVD sales are not representative. I don't mean to sound butthurt but that's a really flimsy tired argument.
DVD sales are not representative of the GA. Box office AND critics ratings are evidence in support of IM3 being more successful than MoS. That's called a fact
This "Superman is an Icon" thing doesn't really hold up in today's comic book movie industry. The fact that Superman Returns did Not sell well is proof of that. So let's stop hiding behind that reasoning.
How was MOS box office weak? Up until that year there were not many superhero movies making 650million plus, and close to 300mill domestic. It made 3 times its budget, and ahead of Well Known and well established supero heroe franchises such as the X-Men at the time.
Of course it's a "sign" MOS was more liked than IM3. If just as many people saw MOS and IM3 in theatres we'd be having a different conversation. But TWICE as many people saw IM3 than MOS. TWICE. Yet more people chose to Own MOS. There's just no getting around those figures.
Urm no, Box Office and Dvd sales are more reprsentative than the 200-300 critics who vote on these things, and more representative than the selection of audiences who vote on ratings which can be rigged by Fanboys and Haters.
Home entertainment sales are a great way to gauge the After effect feeling audiences had on a film. And IM3's after sales simply did not stand up to its Huge box office the way the Dark Knight and Avenger films did.
Studios do look at these things. Otherwise Marvel would have been insane not to keep hold of Shane Black just looking at the box office. Thankfully they made the right call not going after Black again and going forward with the Russos ( whose Winter Soldier also didn't make close to IM3 at the box office but sold better afterwards). They also made the correct call holding onto James Gunn.
