He did have the time but he had just been knocked down by an explosion iirc. It may have taken him a bit to regain his thoughts. Add into that the fact that he just lost his only useful weapon, he was almost certainly at death's door, and he failed once again and you can understand that he may not have gone over every possible outcome and viable avenue available in the seconds he had.
