I disagree. There was an extremely small chance of the militia crew killing the dragon even at night. I deem that an act of idiocy for not waiting/taking his own advice until the odds were more in his favor.

There was a zero chance of Van Zan surviving jumping off a tower and directly into a dragon's mouth. I deem that suicidal.

Nah, jumping into the dragon's mouth is suicidal, just happened to be stronger than his cowardice in that final scene of his.

Could also argue that he was such a coward, he chose suicide over having to face his failures.
