That's kind of conjecture at this point. The film made it appear as if David created the things with the black goo. Fucking stupid.

I can't understand this guy very well, lol, but I think he hated it, too...

Looking at people's disappointed with the movie in this thread... Don't think the movie was quite that bad.

It was a decent film. But not as good as the hype made out.

Wow... Leech didn't like the film.

Maybe they could say that the Engineers actually invented the xenos first and David just stumbled upon it and they can still show another Engineer planet at some point, but I really doubt that's the direction they'll go with it because they placed David

Spoiler:
on the colonization ship with the thousands of people and embryos for him to spread them across the galaxy
. So clearly they intend this to be the explanation for the xenos existing. So unless Ridley Scott shifts directions again because of fan complaints (which he should, but I doubt he will), I don't see it happening. I think most Alien fans are going to be far more pissed off by AC than they were with Prometheus. That's the impression I'm getting from looking around the web and youtube videos, etc. Alien fans fucking hate what this film has done.

The best we can hope for is for this film to fail at the box office so they can just stop. I hate to say it, but it's come to that point. What a fucking shame.

That won't happen. Just to large of a general audience what with it getting World Wide Release. It already won the weekend #1 Spot.

We live in a world where Bad Movies can make Big Money.

^ It's not doing amazing at the box office. Performing under Prometheus so far.

That and it only had Wimpy Kid to compete with. Which I hear is also pretty shitty.

Blomkamp's film would probably just be another exercises in stupid fan service, though. And it would retcon Alien 3 and 4, which I don't think they should do.

I'd take fan-service over the mess we ended up getting. Alien movies are supposed to be better than this. A large part of me wonders how much of Covenant was Scott giving Cameron the middle finger, and how much of it was him trying to actually make a decent movie.

What I find myself thinking most though, is holy shit, Dan O'Bannon is seriously ****ing missed at this point.

Yeah, but it had a lower budget than Prometheus. Quite significantly lower actually. Plus it'll open in China and Japan and will probably end up making a decent profit. Let's hope not, though. Fuck... does anyone even care about seeing another David sequel? David: Covenant. David: Awakening. David: The Revenge on Humanity.

half in the bag doesn't recommend...

Here's a better idea they could have gone with for this film:

I think every alien fan would have wanted to see a home planet of the xenomorphs. The Engineers seed worlds, right? So why didn't they just dedicate a whole planet to the fuckers? They could have seeded it with xenos and the xenos could have evolved on that planet and the Covenant could have quite unfortunately stumbled onto it and go from there. Then Shaw and David could have still gone off on their mission. Problem solved. Everyone's happy, and it's not stupid as fuck. In fact it would have been better because there would have been a lot more aliens. You could even still have plenty of stupid horror tropes with it, too. But to see a world inhabited by the xenos would be a fan's wet dream. It wouldn't even really matter what you do beyond that. Just seeing it would delight every Alien fan.

It's just with the imagination that's possible with today's technology they royally fucked this up.

Also, in regards to what others said, Ridley Scott himself said that David is the creator of the Xenos. The black good might have been the building blocks, but he's the one that put them together.

He did indeed. He's gone senile and can't be trusted anymore. It's in this video here at 4:12 or so...

Oh, I don't trust him either. But for now, this is his baby, so what he says is canon, sadly.

Yet he can still churn out gems like The Martian.

Eh....Martian was good but not great.

The Martian had great writing. It was a great book. Ridley has always done good adaptations of good books.

But the writing on Covenant is a total catastrophe.

There was a great comic a while back (like, the 90s) where these Humans went to a Xeno planet and found that xenomorphs had evolved on said planet, but so had other creatures that were actually higher in the food chain than the Xenmorphs themselves. I would have loved to see something like that, especially since we know for a fact that the black goo has been around for a very, VERY long time.

That would fucking rule as a big budget movie.

What. The. Covenant. (To me "Covenant" is going to be synonymous with "Fuck."😉

I mean seriously, they could have still had the first half of this movie. The first half was decent. It was a decent sci-fi horror film. Just make the planet look a lot different and add more aliens. So damn simple to do.

Yeah. I was enjoying the movie for the most part up until the lander got blown to shit. After that... Eesh.

^ Yeah, I really had no idea it would get fucked up so royally. Just didn't see it coming. Maybe I would have if I had watched any of the trailers.

Man, I really hope for your sake Leech that Alien 5 manages to redeem enough things for ya. It's just always hard seeing someone this passionate and ballsdeep about a series be that let down by something in it. This turn of events hurts me too of course since it incidentally took a blow to my namesake kinda, but even the best directors can have their misses or drop the ball somewhere. :/

Sigh. Think I'll wait to see this at a later time rather than at the cinema. At least it won't get money from me that way.
