I'll admit, some of the effects look cheap, but not the animated creatures. Those look great as far as I'm concerned. To me it's more the lighting with the greenscreens.
Twohy wanted to film outdoors but the initial financial hassles postponed the beginning of the production...the weather changed & they were forced to go indoor with green screen.
Thoroughly enjoyed the movie but yes, I was a tad disappointed at all the hype being darker & grittier...it wasn't.
Riddick seemed a bit too laid back at times...going through the motions...he wasn't as ominous or formidable as CoR.
The fight scenes were a mixed bag. The decision to use slow motion when it would've been more effective as a fast sequence & vice versa would've made a better impact on the action.
Sadly the mercs were one dimensional & simply there for fodder...none of them proved menacing on their own & that young God fearing merc was so out of place, his role was simply annoying.
Poor Katee too...the camera would pan on her character but she wasn't given any lines to say making her look awkward.
One too many nods to Pitch Black left me thinking, "Yeah yeah we get it already."
Overall an enjoyable movie. It was longer than it should've been & I imagine more deleted scenes to be expected on dvd.
Outta 10, I'd say a 6.5.
Guys, guys, guys...
Don't forget the most important character in the movie, played by Keri Hilson... lol

How was it NOT? He killed fu#kers with bear traps and strung one up like a puppet decoy... that's pretty damn gritty. He crawled around with a compound fracture and realigned it between rocks... a Necro got his head blown off, etc. etc... Did you guys even see the same movie?

Yeah I didn't get the point of her character...
I mean the merc ship looked pretty big & powerful & yet they had to sacrifice her to make room for Riddick?
And considering they really only needed Riddick's head in the first place...
That was weird.

When I think of dark & gritty movies, I think Dredd,300, Lawless, No Country For Old Men, Angel heart,The Cell, Sin City & 28 Days later.
Yes, Riddick was violent (The bear traps were cool!) but didn't push the envelope...nor did the film get an R-rating, which I thought was what the fan base wanted & Diesel promised to deliver.
By all accounts, Pitch Black was dark & gritty & Riddick just seemed a more polished version without pushing boundaries & that's a shame.

Snapping his compound fractured ankle back into location, hiding in toxic water, carving a sword from the bones of wild animals, raising a wild canine, building up his immune system by injecting small doses of poison over time. It was something that interested me, as a survivor myself.
Lol at the people being bored at the start of the movie in this thread8.5/10 from me
Plus I was attracted by the character Dahl, reminded me of Trinity from the Matrix, pretty, intelligent, and tough. But, she was why I ended up hating the movie. I've had some awful experiences with rejection in my life, and I immediately sympathized with the machete guy. So no more Riddick for me. It makes me angry that I've been warped into hating one of my favorite sci fis for being a broken person that just happened to be offended by that little sub-plot. Wish it hadn't affected me, but it did. For that matter, wish I'd been able to handle social situations the way I can now when I was younger. I wish some traumas never happened at all, wish I could have that part of my brain cut out.

You sympathise with a person whom the audience perceives regularly raped the female prisoner they had...before shooting her in the back.
Then later implied he wanted to do nasty things with Dahl also.
You immediately sympathised with him?
Originally posted by Esau CairnNo, I saw an attractive female, saw rejection and violence toward him, and then I saw her turn into a total **** for another dude after claiming she was a lesbian. It just brought back bad memories, registered on a bad frequency, and triggered a bad vibe en-movie; even though I've never raped or killed anyone. Sorry, it's psychology.

Just like music, it's not about the song, it's about the feeling you get when you hear the song. A romance where a guy gets rejected, beat down, and then humiliated by another guy - but in the end he proves it was all unfair treatment and gets a better girl would automatically become one of my favorite movies even if it's shit.
