I never imagined Superman had any recourse against any form of magical battlefield removal (BFR), and never until you posted this did I recall seeing him do aught but fail against it.
I don't even now know how they justified it, of course, and, really, I'm not sure they can, but now at least I can give credence to the idea that BFR could fail against Superman, which I couldn't honestly do before yesterday. [/B]

My point is that both Thor and Surfer don't hold back when fighting seriously. Yes if they are doing friendly fights or trying to reason with the opponent or something along those lines then of course they hold back. You can't tell me that when Surfer blasts Thanos he is holding back or when Thor is slamming down on Gladiator or fighting Angir he is holding back his strength.
Holding back has nothing to do with the choice of powers but the level in which you use them (punching with half strength vs. punching with full strength)
Superman holds back consciously and subconsciously.
