It was like a doubled edged sword. AvX gave Thor some great feats, even though he was marginalized completely (if you removed Thor, the story wouldn't be effected one way or the other) and generally overpowered. His ongoing, on the other hand, turned his "average" into killing skyfathers and shit at the expense of him being bipolar as phuck.
Now, we have a well written Thor, both in his solo book and in team titles.
It did, that's true. Resisting enhanced Emma prying into his mind, the KO of the PF, fighting it out with Phoenix Namor for a bit, etc.
AvX wasn't unbearable really, it was bad no doubt since like you said it made Thor really unimportant to the story. Some guy the P5 got to beat up to look powerful for. The worst of it came during AvX #11-12 to me, when everyone was getting in their shots on Scott and Emma, and Thor shows up to either get KO'd or literally brushed aside. But even that was bearable.
What made that year in general just awful for Thor was even when he shined power wise like in Mighty Thor, it was unreadable for me. The biggest reason I got into Thor was because he combined elegance power and heroism into one. When they take away his elegance and heroism and have him threatening to bash in enchantresses face in or slamming a mutant teen with his class 100 strength in the gut (not Mighty Thor but it was in character for him at the time) it kills the story and any feeling of enjoyment I can get from reading about him. Even with the good feats.

Like honestly, power/feat wise, outside of random jobbing/PIS here and there Thor didn't get "nerfed" over the past couple of years. I mean, the guy clipped the PF's wings, recovered from beatings from the Phoenix Five faster than Gladiator (another high herald who was basically beaten half to death and placed in intensive care), killed Surtur, killed the Serpent, beat Nul/Angrir, killed the Demogorge, stalemated Surfer while injured, etc. But god damn, Thor's character got raped to death by Fraction. When phucking Bendis writes a more in character Thor than the guy handling his ongoing, there's a serious phucking problem.

Well, at least you can argue that Fraction's Thor was just....Thor being very, very upset or something. At least it's a take on the character, if nothing else.
With Bendis it just feels like he got a note with two sentences describing Thor and then just went with that.

Fraction's Thor was a borderline maniac, man lol
Bendis', on the other hand, at his best, was still more noble and regal than an aggressive brute.
