Even I've been guilty of that, but your description seems more accurate. I already knew deep down that Samus was lonely. I just don't like the way they showed it. I felt it had the narrative quality and execution of a tween drama, and that alone basically forced me away from it. I never was completely sure though.

You should read the metroid manga, it will make you understand what they were trying to do in the story and why they failed to convey it properly. There was only one part of Other M i had a problem with. Once you read the manga you'll see what i mean. Anyway it's a good game, don't dismiss it. I have a complete playthrough i could upload if i were convinced to do so.

I looked deeper into it. I doubt I'll get it based simply on the poor narrative (that I hope to God is later considered non-canon). Call me stubborn, absurd, whatever, but I don't think a game is worth getting simply for it's gameplay alone. If I'm shooting aliens, stabbing dudes in the face, or blowing shit up, I want to have a good reason for doing it. I want to feel my time invested is met with a more rewarding experience.
