Silence, whore. Palpatine and Tywin Lannister are the only villains appropriately awesome enough for a Star Wars movie.
Thematically, it's a wash. On the one hand, it undermines Vader's ROTJ sacrifice, but on the other, Palpatine is arguably the single most important character in all six films in that the story is driven entirely by his actions. The saga carrying on without him seems disturbing.
