Yeah, here are some of the movies that show up in my top 50:

Matrix Trilogy
Star Wars Ep 1-6
Prometheus
Dark City
Gladiator
Inglourious Basterds
Alien
X-men 2
Terminator 2
Equilibrium
The Watchmen

All I had to do was go down my 5-star Netflix list. 😄

Anyway, clearly, I have terrible taste in films. Just terrible.

Not too often I meet someone that has watched Dark City. I love that movie.

Saw the film last night.

It was decent. 6.5-7 out of 10.

But it...I dunno. There didn't seem to be anywhere even remotely close to enough Chris Pratt humor. There was 2-3 good Chris Pratt moments (like the "He is just going to say 'I am Groot'", when they first boarded Ronan's ship).

The movie suffered from being PG-13, like most movies, these days (there is a movement out there to get rid of the PG-13 rating).

The character development also seemed extremely forced. Everything, from the beginning to the end, seemed uncomfortably forced. There was nothing about the characters that made me think they were memorable. For me, I got the overwhelming feeling that they were included for marketing purposes (action figures, shirts, and so forth).

And that damn raccoon was trying way too damn hard to be funny (not his fault). He came off as that annoying and angry guy at parties that gets waaay too drunk and thinks he's hilarious.

Seems they spent far too much time on effects and not nearly enough time and writing a decent script.

Also, all the character's powers were stupidly subdued.

Perhaps the next film will be much more enjoyable than this one? I think there is a better story being told in the next film. They hinted at that.

Summary: Guardians of the Galaxy is a movie so filed with tropes, clichés, and lame humor that it makes you cringe and moan. It has excellent moments, too. Top notch effects, for sure. Everything about the characters was very forced and superficial. Watch it to be mildly entertained.

It is one of those movies that you turn on to have background noise while your do stuff around the house.

To me, it seemed like a more comedic version of the new Abrams ST with plot elements of SW.

While I am a fan of Star Wars I agree with this statement. I love Guardians! For me it is the top dog of the marvel movies. Avengers is second for me now.

Yes, I did get a very Star Wars-ish vibe from this film. It felt like Star Wars but without any memorable characters.

That's a great way to put it. I would agree that a lot of the humor felt like it was the same brand as the new Star Trek movies (but the humor in GotG was not as polished as the ST humor).

As do I. That was an amazing film that not only entertained thoroughly but made me think. It's the kind of film only someone like Nolan would do these days amongst all the recycled crap. So vastly underrated. At least Ebert gave it it's rightful due.

I know I liked you for some reason.

I should also mention that The Dark Knight is definitely in my top 10 list (as opposed to my top 50)...forgot about that film.

That was probably my best theater experience ever. And definitely the best of the live action Batman films. They lack the amazing thematic and philosophical elements presented in TDK.

Agreed I enjoyed that film on so many levels.

Back at ya, yeah the Dark Knight is a good movie.

I think TDK represents the pinnacle of what can be done with the PG-13 rating in terms of entertainment and the right amount of "dark elements." Sure, a Rated R Batman film would have been easier to do but Nolan knew what he was doing.

Edit - But, yes, TDk and probably Inglourious Basterds were my two best movie theater experiences.

That's something I need to watch again, saw it once back in the late 90's. It's a solid scifi flick, but did horribly at the box office.

Equilibrium is similar: amazing film but did poorly at the box office.

That is another movie I greatly enjoy. I own both.

Awesome movie. Although I think I prefer Batman Begins. Both really great movies though.

I think Batman Begins is the better Batman movie if that makes sense while TDK is a good movie with a really great element in it with the Joker.

When I am in the right mood, I like Batman Begins more than TDK.

Also, I should note that my Blu-ray collection is less than 10 movies deep. I own Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Perhaps that is why I like Nolan films so much? They have high rewatchability. That is probably why I like Tarantino so much, too: high rewatchability.

Not really. I just expect a bit of effort when it comes to comedy.

If I was a loser, I would go down the entire movie, add annotations, and list all the tropes and clichés that pop-up.

Don't you feel insulted that the entire movie is just a massive marketing scheme? It has this disgusting feel to it...like everything was designed to appeal to the greatest number of people. Kind of like when you are greeted by a salesman at a high-end electronics store. They just tell you everything you want to hear. In small doses, that can be okay, as long as it is mixed in with something genuine and meaningful.

This movie? Pure salesmanship. Pure marketing. It is like a panel of marketing experts sat around a table and made piece-wise decisions on what to include in the film. Oh, wait, that is exactly what happened.* 😐

*Maybe you know what I mean. Think of the live-action Transformer movies. Those do the same thing but the movie doesn't try to hide the fact that they are appealing to the masses. They are in your face about it. Using the simile of the salesman, the Transformer movies are like a salesman that says, "Hey, I am going to use every trick in the marketing book to get you to buy our products." Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't do that. It is not subtle, though. It is still in your face. It just does not get honest enough about itself like the Transformer films. I rated the Transformer films around the same as GotG. I wonder why? 😄

Personally the comedy aspect worked

That's not true.

Movie ticket sales have dropped off, sharply, for the film. It does not appear to have the staying power as other films such as Avengers. People are not, generally, going back to see this movie again. That is not the sign of a "universally appealing film" that people see over and over. 😄

By the way, Avengers was a better film than this. 😄
