It's simple really, people don't like their consoles. The Wii was, IMO, a train wreck getting only one or two game I was interested in a year. The fact that the Wii didn't multiplat games like Skyrim really killed it.

To be honest, neither do I. They're a company based on gaming, unlike Sony and Microsoft.
That said, their video game consoles have been behind for two generations. Not in terms of sales obviously, but in terms of quality and accessibility. There's a reason why most third party developers who create multiplatform games stick to PC, PS3/4, and the Xbox 360/Xbone.
And making handhelds only would not be going software only.
