Merchandise sales does not automatically equate to brand awareness. As noted, most of the world is dirt poor. If you're parents living in India barely making enough to feed your four children, you're not running out to buy a Spider-man shirt, toys and lunchbox because a blockbuster film was released. From people that watch every movie and buy all the toys to people that dont even watch the movies or buy any merchandising.
