From the marketing. Batman, Joker are the most popular characters in DC. Harley is up there too. Way more popular than the transformers name before the movies came out. Even after the transformer movies came out Batman and the Joker are bigger names and SS was marketed showcasing them.

I don't know. Maybe I was following it too much, but Joker was never going to be the main villain. But the actual team was the ones heavily marketed. Joker was mainly going to be attached to Harley.

Besides the countless TV spots and trailers spotlighting Joker, Batman and Harley, we also have 2 music videos featuring Joker and magazine covers.
