Finally playing through Dragon's Dogma after years of having it on my wish list. It's quite confusing and punishing atm but I'll pull through.
Climbing is hard to get used to and if you screw up and get grabbed by said monster or try to climb the part of a monster that uses physical attacks it can scare you off of climbing one for a long time, but monster-climbing is ESSENTIAL in this game for any class that isn't magic.
All I can say is you should experiment with classes, I try to unlock all of them as soon as possible, you can switch them when you reach level 10.
The game also has a very initially limited fast travel system that's easy to miss: Go into your bank the second you reach the capital and pull out the Eternal Ferrystone, it allows you to fast-travel at first only to Cassardis, Gran Soren, and Bitterblack Isle (once you go there for the first time I believe.)
Sell the outfits and the premium equipment that are in your bank (the ones that glow green)... All of them, you are better off doing so and using the massive amount of cash you get to buy yourself a full kit of armor and weapons. (don't forget to equip clothing underneath it).
SAVE VERY OFTEN. Every time you reach a half-way point on a road, save save save, your sanity will thank you, at some point you'll meet a big-ass monster and remember you haven't saved for the last 30 minutes only to scream in frustration as you get one-shotted after you got lucky with rng earlier (it has a tendency to sometimes screw you over when it comes to loot, though don't worry, the game obviously includes guaranteed drop and spawn rates) and found some bad-ass new sword or something.
The game has customizable fast-travel points. You will need to find them through-out the world, these don't include the built-in portcrystals at Gran Soren, Cassardis, and Bitterblack Isle. These fast-travel points are purple glowing stones called portcrystals that you can find all over the map, initially you only get access to 5-6, but they save tremendous time so getting them is always worth it. (NG+ gives you unlimited access to them but they are expensive and you can only set down 10 at once.) Once you have a portcrystal, simply go somewhere in the world and place it down, then you can fast-travel there anytime you want.
Experiment with button presses, pay C L O S E attention to prompts and tutorials (though don't expect too much help, as you even said it's brutal and will not hold your hand in the slightest.)
Yes a lot of this needed explaining, (since a lot of this isn't really explained anywhere in the game) and this is better then you going on the wiki and potentially getting half the game spoiled, which is something you do not wanna do.
If you want to enjoy the story you must try to explore the world, unless you dgaf about the story. But in case you do, make sure to explore the world, and something else very important: Sidequests are not timed but they are tied to main quest progression. So if you accepted a sidequest early on and go too far into the main story, it will fail automatically and you'll have to wait till NG+ to do it again.
Finally, stats are based on your current class, as in, you can't expect to be a great magic user if you've been using swords as a Fighter and Warrior the whole time. If you ARE interested in mix/maxing, there's a Dragon's Dogma stat calculator here: https://stackoverflow.github.io/dragons-dogma-stat-planner/
^ Keep in mind your equipped augments if the numbers appear off, certain augments do boost certain stats after all.
I know this was a lot but going in blind scares a lot of people off this game, trust me.
TL;DR beginner's guide to DD.

I take so many hits, the grub reward that makes soul from taking damage is almost mandatory. And so is the "Soul shell", the fast focus, the long nail, the other thing that charges up focus faster..
Just not enough notch's, at 7 right now.
I guess I can just keep at it until I learn the moved do well, I can avoid them all. Bet I can pull it off, but not so sure its worth the effort.

I remember I quit not long into DD cuz I was a mage and for some reason my character kept failing to cast magic. I probably should have put more effort into it.
I recently found my copy for xbox 360 so perhaps I'll give it another try.

Almost got that son of a *****.
Just about perfected dodging his attacks and hitting his openings, but got careless in phase 2.
It takes sooo long to whittle him down. I'm using fragile strength, and I'm not sure its even doing anything in a dream fight.

It frequently goes on sale and I've seen it as low as $8 before.
But you also get 60FPS, full-screen, and all of the DLC on top of BBI.
It's also on PS4, Xbone, and Nintendo Switch and the PS4/Xbone versions are locked at 30 I believe. Nintendo Switch version is unlocked and unfortunately has a few unpatched glitches but still runs and looks way better then the original or Dark Arisen on the old systems.
Playing it on PC though is literally almost like playing a completely different game due simply to how goddamn good it looks, not that it looks good today when compared to shit like Witcher 3, but with the graphical improvements it does look passable as a modern game.
I bought it for Kazenji awhile back on steam and to my knowledge he still hasn't touched it xD.
Originally posted by cdtmSo? IIRC there's a mod that lets you play as Berserk Armor Guts which is way cooler then playing as Golden Age Guts.
Don't listen to him Surtur, the modern versions cut out the Berserk armors. Gutts or Griffith.

DD has enough cool armor sets on it's own regardless that are still worth collecting.

And thats fine, but the exclusion of 2 sets does not make it a worse version, there are plenty of fantastic armor sets in the game already.
I suppose not.
Eh, I'm fine with the 360 version. Same way I play Vanquish and Darksiders 1 and 2 on it (Despite having the warmastered and deathmastered editions on Epic Game Store)
It's up to Surt. Only real reason to buy it again is access to the online Ur-Dragon and pawns.
Me, I try to avoid paying new money for old rope where I can.

DD on last-gen is commonly sub-20 FPS.

I do have Steam, but I don't have DD on steam. I'm just gonna stick with the 360 version.
