Black suspect dies after Baltimore cops break his spine in ‘brutal’ police beating:

I don't really support Gray, he has a long arrest record of being a scummy guy. Doesn't mean the police have a right to cause his death though.

This is the fundamental disconnect between people demanding more police accountability and those who unconditionally defend the police. Criminals have human rights, and there rules about what the police can and can't do, and it isn't supporting a criminal when you point out that the police overstep their bounds in handling said criminal, it's holding the police to the standard society should set for them.

If we turn a blind eye to police abuse of criminals, it makes it easier for the police to start abusing other noncriminal citizens.

These pro cop no matter what people don't seem to realize that if cops are beating criminals, then they're, y'know, also criminals.

Apparently, the police van made an additional, previously, unknown stop.

I googled "Logical riots"

Nothing of relevance came up.

And here's the issue: I agree that you probably wouldn't join in riots (well, I don't know you, but I don't get any violent vibes from you) but you probably weren't born into a poor, uneducated black family in an impoverished area rife with crime and with few realistic prospects. It's all well and good to look down from your pedestal on the rioters when you've probably lived a much more privileged life.

I'm not going to condone the riots, I think there are better ways of gaining the world's attention and spotlighting Baltimore's many problems, but I'm also not going to join in on the circle jerk of sanctimonious contempt for the people of Baltimore that seems to be clogging up the internet. It's completely useless and will only further entrench the Us vs Them mentality that's causing the riots in the first place.

You're sounding an awful lot like Jesus Christ in this post. You know...wise, charitable, benevolent, understanding, etc.

Now if only more Christians could have this view.

I find it weird that so many people who are clearly racist in this situation are "white Christians."

Stringer, what's the status out there?

A lot whiter

I fear that this is not the last time this is going to happen where a city rages.

A few days ago I unfriended someone for the first time on FB because she outed herself as a bigot regarding the Baltimore riots.

It's funny--my friends from here in Miami are all posting links to the Daily Kos and The Guardian and Salon decrying the racism infecting America while my old friends from Niceville are putting up status updates where they hope the cops start shooting the rioters. There are two Floridas, and I'm like the bridge between them.

@Omegavision, what did your friend stated exactly? Details?

Freddy Gray had twice the levels of lead in his body and was getting a lead disability check. He was from the Sandtown area. Half of the folks in state prison of Maryland from that area.

Court papers describe Gray's childhood as problematic. He lived with his heroin-addicted disabled mother in a home in Sandtown-Winchester that contained enough poisonous lead in the peeling painted walls and windowsills for a court settlement to conclude that he and his two sisters were incapable of leading normal functioning lives.
Lab tests conducted in the 1990s showed that they had levels of lead in their blood nearly double what the state of Maryland defines as the minimum for lead poisoning.
In Baltimore, more than 2,600 children have been found to have high levels of lead in their blood, according an annual report released by the Maryland Department of the Environment in 2014.
'This is the toxic legacy of lead-based paint,” Ruth Ann Norton, head of the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative and a founding member of the Maryland Lead Poisoning Prevention Commission, told the Baltimore Sun.
'Our kids are ill equipped to stay in the classroom, finish school. They’re very unlikely to go on to higher education. They’re less likely to be able to hold a job', she said.
'They’re less equipped to be able to overcome the poverty and other circumstances that pull them down. Children with lead poisoning will have defects, regardless of whether their parents are ‘nice’ or not.'
Gray lived off the resulting 'lead check' settlement although it is unclear exactly how much he received.
Whatever money he did have he was said to spend buying designer accessories.
The Sandtown neighborhood is a 72-block neighborhood made up of almost entirely of African Americans.
More than one-third of residents live below the poverty line, and nearly a quarter are unemployed.
The majority of Maryland's state prison population are said to said to hail from Sandtown, according to the Justice Policy Institute

He was only 25, which means that growing up in the 90's as a child he was exposed to lead like that. I did not know houses are still around to cause that kind of damage. Thought the were all torn down.

I don't remember the exact words, but I believe there was some dehumanization going on (she might have called them "disgusting animals"😉 and she said she was hoping the police would start shooting them.

I'm surprise the video didn't show cops doing cartwheels in the video ^

She called blacks specifically "animals", or the rioters in general?

Did she call black people "disgusting animals" or did she call the looters "disgusting animals"?

Because if she called the looters "disgusting animals", she's correct. They are opportunistic savages. If it were not for my opposition to violence, I would definitely be okay with "shoot to kill, on sight" when they are looting. I held the same opinion in Ferguson but, in my defense, I thought most of the looters in Ferguson were white people until a few weeks into the ordeal (because I was ignorant). Since I had a chance to digest my thoughts on it, their race does not matter: they are savage animals if they do that. White, black, brown, purple: doesn't matter.

If I caught any of my family members doing that, I'd snatch them up by their ears and drag them away just like that mom did to her son. 😆

Obama specifically called them thugs so, don't feel obligated to avoid that word.

So Obama's become for you the black friend who tells you it's okay to use the T-word?

Are you the mortal authority claiming high ground around here?

I just find it strange that he's been so eloquently avoiding that word in the past goes full boat with it. But maybe he's calling it like he sees it, there is no need for the looting and pillaging. That is thuggish behavior.

I was making a joke.

But while we're on the subject, would you use the word 'thug' to describe the Kentucky fans who set fire to cars and caused general mayhem after they won the basketball championship?
