My guess is they did it before asking him, then asked him, and when he said no they felt like they didn't want to go back to it.

Why bother asking at all if you've already made up your mind. That's like if I show up at your house and ask you what you want for dinner, and then right after you answer I say "jk I brought pizza f*ck you".

Free publicity if he agrees.

I mean, when I heard about it, I thought Takei would be on-board. If you've read about his history, you see what he want through as a young man, and the how important it was for him to be in Star Trek both individually and on a cultural level. Then when he finally came out, there was a lot of talk about "well, does this make Sulu gay?". TBH I never really cared one way or another, but I can see why the writers thought it would be okay.

Takei knew Roddenberry personally though, so his opinion on the matter is one i'd feel obligated to follow.

Sorry, double post.

Whether one character turns out to be gay is no big deal IMO.

I just honestly think the movie (franchise) shouldn't get side tracked with too many romantic sub plots on board The Enterprise.

There's already Spock & Uhura. I don't feel we really need another relationship storyline to take the focus away from the story.

I'm also guessing Sulu's love interest is on that space station where The Enterprise is being repaired & not someone on the crew.

The love story angle fits better with Star Wars whereas Star Trek has always been more mission related.

So Sulu has something in common with Robtard.

Yeah I saw him on Star Talk with Neil Degrasse Tyson. There was one briefly hilarious moment where he is talking about how important it was for an asian to be on a tv series and he made a comment about how at that time you were more likely to be driving a taxi then on a tv show. Then someone else points out Sulu was the helmsman and thus he was driving them all around.

But anyways, I think what you just said kind of disturbs me in a way. By that I mean the part about people wondering if Sulu is gay merely because the actor came out as gay. It's as if they see no disconnect between the character and the person playing it. Especially when I can't recall any hint of him being gay.

I just wonder how they will play this out. Will it be a plot point or will Kirk and Spock just be talking on the bridge and all of a sudden Sulu leans over and says "I'd f*ck you Kirk".

Though you guys remember when Riker wanted to bang the androgynous person? To be fair she/he did lean more towards the side of female.

That is a huge problem though; a lot of people can't separate the actor from the character. Then you have the weirdos at the other end of the scale that think they have more right to talk about the character than the actor does (Supernatural for example).

If you really want to know, what I heard about how they'll mention it is that

Spoiler:
there's a scene with Sulu before he ships out, and he's saying goodbye to his husband and child
.

That's what I read anyway, so take it with a pinch of salt.

As for Riker, I remember reading that Jonathan Frakes (the guy that played him, for anyone that doesn't know) wanted a male actor to play Soren, as he felt the episode's point didn't come across as strongly with a female actor.

Yeah that is why TNG was so good because they do play around with a lot of different themes and subjects. Reminds me of the episode with Deanna Troi's mother who was romantically interested in a man from a culture where they commit suicide once they reach a certain age(like 60).

In other words the episodes make you really think. Like the one where Data goes on trial for the right not to be disassembled and studied and Picard is essentially his defense lawyer with Riker being forced to prosecute. One of the best episodes in the series and it wasn't about explosions or alien beings or anything like that.

Yeah, it's an absolutely HUGE part of Star Trek's message that people should respect other cultures (even when they're wrong in your eyes), and to try to find a common ground. To try to make you see things from other perspectives. When you can't, that's what phasers are for.

Even in TNG, they took the "oh, the Klingons were the bad guys in TOS? Let's put one on the bridge!" approach.

Yup @ Data. Amazing episode.

Yep, Roddenberry could be a dick at times, but he truly did want to push this message of acceptance and tolerance.

I remember a story about him and the actress who pays Uhura. The studio or whoever was behind it didn't want to accept her into...I don't know, some kind of guild or whatever, it had to do with payment, etc. and they didn't want to do it because of her color and then Roddenberry said okay but then he contracted her in a way that she ended up being paid more than she would of before.

Sounds about right. iirc, Uhura was actually thinking about quitting at one point, and MLK actually wrote to her and asked her not to, as it was the only show he let his kids watch.

Not to mention the kiss between Uhura and Kirk. That took real balls, and fair play to Shatner for making sure they used the cut with the kiss.

Yeah the reason she wanted to quit is because she found out the producers or whatever were withholding all her fan mail.

Unity is not your strength it is a weakness.

Bandwagon-jumping-fanboying Krall even before the film is out. Called it 👆

Yeah.

Did you see what Simon Pegg said in response to Takei? I thought it was interesting to say the least:

Well that's nothing new for him. Remember him fanboying Kylo Ren before TFA was out.. And then they outright confirm in the film he's not as powerful as Vader so he switches to Snoke who we know literally nothing about 😂

That's exactly what bothers me.

FYI- Sulu had a family and was married with a child in the Original timeline (As seen in Generations), and I think that kind of bothers Takei that sexuality is something that can just switch like that in a new timeline.

I honestly have no hopes for the film with Pegg having so much input. My prediction it will be the worst if this new Trek trilogy:

I have no idea if it's true or not, but I've read more than once that Pegg is far from the same guy that gave us the Cornetto trilogy. Hollywood apparently did a number on him, and that whole "guy who you could share a pint with and geek out about Star Wars with" aspect of him is long gone.

Don't blame Pegg though, blame others. The guy nearly quit the movie several times and they needed JJ Abrams to talk him into staying on this film. When the first trailer came out his response was essentially "wtf was that".

It should tell you something that he wanted to quit so much. The bottom line is they should of waited until JJ was available to direct.

Early reviews are strong for this film. TrekBBS has several people that attended the Australian premiere for the film.

Have faith it could be good.

I'm not sure what all the outrage is about. Who the **** cares what Sulu's sexual preferences are. Sulu's sexuality was never a core part of his character so I don't care.

If Kirk or someone whose sexuality is more core to their character was turned gay THAT would bother me a bit I guess
