Star Trek Beyond

Pushing Daisies was a fantastic show and I've heard Hannibal is pretty good too so I have high hopes for Bryan Fuller doing a star trek. The only thing that has me miffed is star trek being released exclusively on some CBS streaming service, just air it like a proper show can't you

Yeah, Hannibal is excellent. Agreed that it's a real dick move. Still, nice to have a new series.

I was hoping for it to be on Showtime or Netflix. The new show will also be released weekly to prevent people from just signing up and cancelling.

I prefer weekly, tbh. Though this is the way it's going to be going forward, I think. All of these tv people getting annoyed that Netflix is stealing their thunder, and they all start coming up with their own net-based services. It's cable packages all over again.

I think CW have done the smart thing. Making a deal with Netflix so that as soon as their series seasons have aired the finale they'll be available to stream there.

If you can't beat them, join them.

Fingers crossed that when the new series premieres later this year/early next year, it's a good one.

well if it isn't , I will drive down to cbs and riot 😄

New Star Wars trailer rumored to be attached to this film.

Can't wait for the new star wars trailer, have high hopes, higher than for force awakens.

That's the smart move. Unfortunately, many people aren't that smart. Even Netflix have gotten to the point where they've been reducing a lot of the third party content they have, and have been increasing production of their own stuff.

That'd be nice.

Sulu will be gay in this film, I get the original actor was offscreen but to make this change for the character...... 😬

Even George Takei not happy about the change

They asked him beforehand too, and he said he didn't agree with it. It's their choice at the end of the day, but like Takei said, this is the 50th anniversary of ST.

What does that have to do with having Sulu Gay.

Actually they do not put up a season until the next season begins to air. So for instance only 1 season of the Flash is on netflix right now despite the fact the previous season ended in May.

So they Dumbledored him. Also why would they spoil that he is gay? Why is this a fact they felt people needed to be told before the film came out?

On the other hand this is suppose to be a separate universe.

True but what purpose does it really serve other than the "oh look Sulu is gay" aspect of it? For this specific detail to be released like this in this way...it comes off as obvious why they decided to make him gay. He's not Sulu anymore, he's the gay Sulu instead of a man who just happens to be into dudes.

I also wonder if they would of done this if the original actor wasn't gay. Maybe this was just some misguided tribute to him? Who knows.

Also why did they bother to ask Takeii before hand about this if they were going to ignore his opinion?

They just signed a new deal so that they will be available on Netflix a few days after the finale for each season airs.

Not sure when the deal kicks in though.

Takei said that it was messing with Roddenberry's legacy, which makes it worse on the anniversary of Star Trek to him.

An alternate universe that diverged when the Kelvin was destroyed. Not completely separate.

It was done as a nod to Takei. When I first heard it, I thought "huh, that's cool", but after reading what Takei said, I'm not so sure. I think he's right about the whole "make new characters" thing.

But how is it a nod if they asked him and he didn't like it and they still did it anyways? Since then it sounds like more of a f*ck you to George.

It'd be like if they made Fassbender's Magneto gay as a nod to McKellen. Can't speak for him, but I think that'd take away from McKellen, as part of what makes his performance as Magneto so good is you can not tell he's gay.

He plays a straight character and you don't need to know the sexuality of the actor.

So yeah, introducing a new character as gay would have been much better Imo.

My guess is they did it before asking him, then asked him, and when he said no they felt like they didn't want to go back to it.

Not quite the same thing, I would argue.
