For me it went south after the 3rd season really. Russel back in the 5th season was cool, but they killed him in a lame way. Then Warlow turns out to look nothing like this dread locked f*cker we saw in flashbacks. I choose to believe he possessed Rob Zombie briefly.

No doubt, the part where he kills the dude on the tv show and delivers his rant on live tv is the best part.
Dude talks about eating kids and then says "and now for the weather" in that southern accent that almost seems to allow anyone to say anything horrible and it still somehow sounds elegant.

The animated series from the 1970s is on netflix and I've been watching it. It's bizarre and they even got all the original actors to voice the characters.
One episode has the Enterprise becoming kinda sentient and also becoming a practical jokester. Remember the ship is more or less in charge of making everything, including their uniforms. I point this out merely because then this happens:
I feel I am onto something. Think about it, in the first film Kirk isn't truly upset his dad died or anything like that, he's sexually confused..plowing through many a green skinned alien chicks and not knowing why he feels so unfulfilled.
Spock is the first to challenge him, this is when he is caught cheating. Kirk is stirred by this, irked by Spock. He thinks he just really dislikes Spock, but at the end of the movie when he see's Uhura is with Spock he gets a twinge of jealousy, but not for whom he would suspect: he is jealous she gets to be with Spock, but he brushes it off as just being nervous and jittery over the mission. By the end of the movie he mind melds with older Spock, and see's directly into his soul.
Then, after having become Captain, he almost loses Spock again in a volcano. This is when his true feelings become apparent to him. He loves Spock, and is tortured by this. By the end of the movie he realizes Spock isn't gay, and is distraught. Seeking to end his suffering, he decides to end his life and save the ship. Only to be ripped back from the sweet release of death by magic blood. Kirk is now forever doomed to, everyday, see the one he loves kiss Uhura and hold her and be with her.
No wonder he is so depressed.
