This movie was very good, not Star Wars good but good.

Ehh, we did but we didn't. We had ship to ship battles, but they tended to be a lot more fast paced. It wasn't really the slow methodical battles you'd see in Trek, especially in the original series.

But then those behind these films have gone on record more than once saying they were heavily influenced by Star Wars. In the first movie when Kirk shows up on his motorcycle and see's that huge Starfleet base..that was their Tatooine moment. Haven't seen the latest movie yet, but so many moments in the first two have a lot of SW's vibes. Which IMO isn't a bad thing and I think it's what Trek needed to revitalize it and make it popular among current audiences.

We needed a younger cast and a faster paced movie and they did it while at the same time not utterly gutting everything that made Trek great in the past.

Making Trek in the same vein as Wars is what made it great to me. Abrams Trek is amazing. Into Darkness is one of the best Sci Fi films of all time.

Star Trek will never be Star Wars.

It's projected 60mill OW. Less than the first of the trilogy in 2009.

Quanchi's crying. He was desperate for any NuTrek movie to make at least as much as one of the Star Wars prequels 😂

Well we better get him a box of tissues because that shit isn't happening.

Even with the higher ticket prices of today the NU Trek isn't touching the prequels.

Higher ticket prices and China being huge now!

Yes better get out the tissues

Is Trek not showing in China?

If anyone is curious, scores at Rotten Tomatoes so far:

Critics 84% and General Audience 86%.

^ No it is was talking about how The Prequels didn't really have China.

Anyway looks like a 59.6mill OW. That's just a little less than X-Men Apocalypse. So can expect the same kind of box office assuming similar legs.

To put it in perspective the movie apparently has the same budget as Into Darkness and that movie made only 70 million it's opening weekend. It still turned out to more than double its budget.

Okay wait now the numbers just jumped and wiki says the box office is $89 million.

Yeah but Simon Pegg failed in his goal to make this a Billion Dollar movie. Probably hoping for it to be at least as big as GOTG given one of the execs in early production mentioned they want to make it more like GOTG.

That's Worldwide. Domestic is 60. Into Darkness domestic OW was 75, and ST 2009 was 70 IIRC.

So I think we're looking at 60 mil domestically and the rest from other countries.

So I think around $90 million is decent all things considered, I'm saying this purely in comparison to the numbers Into Darkness did.

^ It's not bad or anything. It's still a viable franchise. But it's dropping from previous instalments ( although will probably gross more WW due to the Chinese market rapidly growing over the last few years ). And it's not what they were aiming and hoping for.

That's a good thing. ST shouldn't strive to be SW, it should strive to be better ST.

Well I remember months ago being worried about some not so good signs. Like the fact Simon Pegg quit the movie several times during the process of it.

IMO they should of waited until JJ could direct. I haven't seen the new movie yet, but I still just feel they should of kept him at the helm.

Some of the problems stem from all the wrong people trying to make this SW's. It's good for those involved in the process of making the movie to be inspired by the franchise.

Unfortunately greedy studio execs get inspired by the $1 billion+ dollars earned and they want to turn Trek into that kind of earner which it won't be.

It will become a bigger earner when they concentrate on making it a better Trek, like Robtard said.

Like Deadpool wasn't trying to make a Billion. It was a passion project, and turned out grossing what Trek has been trying to with a third of the budget.. Irony

Yup. DP's mega success was largely in part to the makers staying relatively true to the source. Future Star Trek films should follow that mentality.

People wanting ST to be more like or just like SW are fools, imo. If you want SW, go watch any of the SW films or shows.

This opens up next month in China, I believe

This movie was really good and that is what matters the most. Star Trek will never make Star Wars money but the franchise is consistent.
