I thought that's what the purpose of today's episode was?
As mentioned, I think they'll just use his Mystic form potential as a loophole for how strong he can become in relation to Goku or Vegeta; SSJB or a new god form for him be damned, which is super lame (titular pun not intended). At least future Trunks got a unique new form that bridged the gap between regular super saiyan and Blue for him, but Gohan it looks like they may just stick with the Mystic form. Nothing wrong with that necessarily, but it's nothing new either.
I hope I'm wrong though.
I thought Trunk's form didn't make sense - apparently he got his power boost from the ki of the remaining mortals - which was very few?
The whole problem with the mystic form for me is apparently Gohan already reached his max potential after the first unlock?
Even Goku and Vegeta were reaching their limits, and only through Whis' special training and the SSB form are they able to progress.

I guess to their logic or whatever you want to call it, unlocking Gohan's potential from Elder Kai allowed him to reach new possible heights in the future, in a similar vein to how Whis made Goku and Vegeta able to progress again.
@ the other posts: The episode hasn't shown up for me on the site I watch some of my shows on yet, but how is that result any surprise by this point? It's Super; I was expecting that kind of hack moment to happen. lol
Also, can't believe no one brought up their final punch shaking the planet. We have no idea on how powerful Gohan has become. He was already extremely powerful at Ultimate form and as shown, his training has took him to new heights. Accept it and move on. I'm glad Goku will no longer be the top dog.

No limits fallacy ftw though I guess. I can take it with everything the show has already thrown by this point, but doesn't mean others can't call out the way it was handled. Seeing Gohan catch up again was something others waited for awhile to happen, yes, but for Goku to be training as a god for how long now, while Gohan catches up just by training with Piccolo in a few hours? You don't see anything off about that? I know you're just caught up in the hype from the fight and being in apologist mode as a result, but c'mon.

Lol...Gohan caught up with some of the most powerful Saiyans in history as a kid and didn't even know how to control ki, let alone fly before he went through training. No one complained about that. No one complained about what Gohan did during the Frieza saga either and he didn't even go theohtb training to achieve those fts. It's Gohan. His specialty is power.
The idea of the super saiyan god (now in the form of Blue) as BotG established is that it's not a kind of level you can reach on your own. Gohan and others either doing so or surpassing it contradicts that completely. Those Z examples with Gohan aren't really relevant to this.
Anyway, about to watch the episode now. Will just enjoy the fight for what it is.

Don't be surprise if they get curbstomped off screen. Maybe Jiren will solo the whole team so that we can see how "tough" he is.

Room of Spirit and Time, Gohan and Piccolo training together under Whis or someone a la Goku & Vegeta... Almost anything would've made more sense than Gohan getting to where he did in the wilderness with Piccolo for just a few hours. Make no mistake though, me calling out stupid parts with the writing =/= me not enjoying the fights. Still get my entertainment's worth out of them usually. 👆

In all seriousness, I did like the fight (particularly the beginning where strategy was being utilized). Good fight scenes, bad logic to premise them on.
