SSB is dark in color though.

The manga pigmented Goku's SSB hair a bit darker in previous chapters:

Compare that to his hair pigmentation in this chapter, and there is definitely a difference:

Personally, I'm really hoping that is just artist error/inconsistency, and Goku did activate SSB against Frost. After all, DBS has heavily alluded to Goku and Vegeta essentially having only two levels now: base and SSB. Their SSJ transformations of old seemingly went out the window when they unlocked Godly ki.

However, this promo material for DBS depicts Goku and Vegeta in their standard/golden-haired SSJ forms during the Champa tournament:

So in all likelihood, Goku did turn into a regular ol' SSJ in this chapter... Which seems so f*cking stupid, as I thought Toriyama's intent was to streamline Saiyan transformations. Meh... srsly

That aside, another possibility I considered is that Toriyama decided to take a page from the original version of BoG...

Recall that after SSG timed out in the original BoG film, Goku reverted to base and continued fighting Beerus. However, he soon transformed into a standard/golden-haired SSJ when his base power wasn't enough and pressed the fight much harder:

Beerus later commented that Goku's power at that level was only slightly weaker than SSG, as he'd absorbed that tier of power into his being. So maybe that's what we're seeing right now in the tournament..? Essentially a 'faux-SSB'.

Just a thought. /shrug

So is there any explanation for why this show is complete dog shit?

Not the manga. Talking about just the show, and its incredibly awful at times animation.

I would have assumed the new Dragon Ball would have something resembling a decent budget and competent animation.

I can't even watch the show. It is absolutely wretched.

No bloody idea.

Maybe they can still access normal states of ssj, and Goku is doing it to conserve his strength. Since he really hasn't been having that tought a time against Frost. Course if the new episode titles are anything to go by (assuming that anime and manga don't differ) Goku is going to lose anyway. So who knows, maybe it is just coloring error.

Also the tourney is whack. If Goku loses there's doubt that Vegeta wins just because and I have my doubts they turn nipples into the hero of the tourney. Though he's apparently stronger.

Also Piccolo is even crazier out of place now considering the first two guys are SSG level and it looks like the rest of the team is as well.

Interesting turn if Goku loses. Curious what Cellemba can do though.

Goku will probably lose die to stamina.

Piccolo will go namekian God mode and win the tournament.

I think Piccolo is stronger than what we think. Especially with him working Gohan the way he did. I also meant to say DUE to stamina, not DIE.

Piccolo will have to eat the Namekian dragon balls to achieve his final form.

I wouldn't be able to respect you if you did 👆

Their "base" level is actually Saiyan-Beyond-God state, right?

Gohan isn't said to have been training at all in the manga version. That's why Goku skips right over him. What happens in RoF arc in the manga might be closer to the movie version where Gohan doesn't feel the need to train and nobody died.

This is what I don't get. Goku should be able to knock out Frost in one hit. He shouldn't have to power-up.

Every little boost in Dragon Ball turned a former equal insignificant. Cell versus Piccolo is a perfect example. He absorbs a few people and suddenly he just shrugs off Piccolo's assaults and casually breaks his neck with a punch.

Perhaps.

It just seems like Toriyama doesn't have a clear vision of the direction he wants to go with Saiyans, so all this random transformation BS comes off as a giant clusterf*ck.

I don't even watch the show and I find it irritating. 👇

Its not even just the show. The manga has ssj looking hair. For whatever random reason, be it coloring error, artist error, or it actually being normal ssj. Then the anime goes and completely changes things that happen in the BoG arc so who knows how much the Tournament arc will change. And I guess in a few episodes we will see if he actually goes ssj or if its ssb. I'm not sure if I expect the anime and manga to actually follow each other now or for them to have different variations on the fights with pretty much the same outcome of who wins and loses. That's kind of why I watch the anime, to see the differences that happen.

That's another part of the steaming pile of clusterf*ck that DBS has become: the anime and manga are both of equal canonicity.... Yet the manga often differs from the anime(and vice versa.) So which version do we go with?

It's just messy.

That's what I keep wondering. Which do you go with.. Or do you just pick whichever fits what you want...since both are equally Canon

Toriyama said the original Dragonball Z anime was simply an extension and canon as well didn't he?

And the anime has more content and has actually covered everything unlike the manga as well. If anything has the claim, it'd be that one. Shame about the 2 or 3 very poorly done episodes though.

Since Piccolo is fighting Frost after Goku loses somehow, is it safe to assume he's god level now? Unless he merged with a ton of other Namekians, I don't see how he'd get that powerful in such a short amount of time.
