Vegeta actually let go of his Ego at the end of the Cell Saga. He accepted that Goku was better than him, and that Gohan was the new protetor of Earth. He even went on to say he will never fight again.I don't care that he hugged his son and kill himself. The fact is, Vegeta threw away his pride as a Saiyan when he allowed Badidi to control him. Worse yet, he killed a bunch of innocent people in front of his Son and Wife just to force Goku to fight.
In all of Dragon Ball, Piccolo till this day still have the best character development. From watching his life from childhood to adulthood.
He started out as a villain in Dragon Ball, to an ally in the Saiyan Saga, a sadistic teacher to Gohan, only to start caring for the kid and becoming a mentor for him. Then a Hero that sacrificed his life for the kid he came to love.
Piccolo's development continued till the Buu saga as the overall wise old man that's been around and seen some shit.
"I don't care that he made the biggest sacrifice he can possibly make trying to protect Earth"
Also the reason why he vowed to stop training was because Goku was gone. Because being better than Goku was his sole reason for living.
In the Buu saga even when he was "evil" he had other things he cared about. As well as a rivalry with Goku. So the timeline is as follows:
Gets evil, kills people, fights Goku
Confesses his love to his family, hugs his son and knocks him out to save him. Kills himself trying to save Earth.
Comes back, fuses with Goku which is huge considering how he feels about it, and is bribed with it because Buu killed Bulma.
Gets mad at Goku for letting their friends and family die by Kid Buu. Gets mad again because he learned Goku said Old Kai could kiss Bulma.
Admits Goku is better than him and is the best. Risks his life just so Goku can defeat Kid Buu.
Coordinates the plan to defeat Buu with a big spirit bomb and wishes the Earth back. And phrases it so that only pure hearted people would come back, specifically who he killed. Which wished him back indicating he wasn't evil, like he wanted when he became Majin.
And pleads with Earth and fights Kid Buu again.
But yeah no, vowing to never fight again and lashing out at Trunk's death are way better character builders.
I'm not denying that Piccolo has a lot of character development. But denying that the Buu saga was better for Vegeta than the Cell saga makes no sense. He spent that entire saga making stupid choices, and is redeemed because he said a couple words at the end of it? Don't destroy the Androids, let Dr Gero activate them, let Cell absorb 18. Don't let Trunks stop him. Don't destroy 18. Etc.
