Thats not the issue. Why do heterosexual couples lose the right to be called husband and wife in the eyes of the law? If a gay couple wants to get married, sure they can, but they can chose to be called a spouse. But husband and wife still should be allowed to be called that.
From what I read, it doesn't sound like the words husband and wife are outlawed. They just changed the wording in the law to be more inclusive.

Anyone can call themselves wife or husband in their own lifes. The government doesn't have to and perhaps shouldn't accommodate that though, especially considering the excessive cultural baggage these words carry. It's better and fairer to everyone to just use neutral terms in legal contracts.

“Under existing law, a reference to ‘husband’ and ‘wife,’ ‘spouses,’ or ‘married persons,’ or a comparable term, includes persons who are lawfully married to each other and persons who were previously lawfully married to each other, as is appropriate under the circumstances of the particular case,” it reads. “The bill would delete references to ‘husband’ or ‘wife’ in the Family Code and would instead refer to a ‘spouse,’ and would make other related changes.”
