I don't know how you got that.

“Under existing law, a reference to ‘husband’ and ‘wife,’ ‘spouses,’ or ‘married persons,’ or a comparable term, includes persons who are lawfully married to each other and persons who were previously lawfully married to each other, as is appropriate under the circumstances of the particular case,” it reads. “The bill would delete references to ‘husband’ or ‘wife’ in the Family Code and would instead refer to a ‘spouse,’ and would make other related changes.”

But that does not keep me from calling someone husband and wife. It's just the way the laws are worded.

How did this come to pass? Were people actually COMPLAINING about how heterosexual couples can refer to each other as husband and wife? Or was there some other reason?

Your sure?

Exactly how are you sure, do you live in California?

Yes, I live in California, so my view is obviously correct, as you must concede now.

Kind of a big deal though.

The idea that everything has to be uniform now..

If gays want to get married, thats great. Taking away gender specific words in marriage is entirely different.

No, not a big deal. lawyer talk is never a big deal to me.

Taking away gender specific words from what? Are you saying that a person performing a wedding cannot say "I now pronounce you husband and wife"?

Thats what I am concerned about, if it this will lead to that.

Well, once you pass the right for same sex couple to marry, you'll have to start thinking about how to word this in your legal documents. At the face of it there's 3 main ways you could do that, 2 of them acceptable and inclusive and 1 homophobic bullshit. These are 1) call everyone spouses and don't concern yourself with the gender of the people in the marriage 2) call both partners wives or husbands depending on their gender (I pronounce you wife and wife, so to speak) or 3) what homophobic assholes would prefer, keep the terms "husband" and "wife" only for heterosexual couples, and call same sex couples "partners" or "spouses".

California seems to have gone with option 1, and good on them.

I'm assuming that the legal aspect of wedding would not use that phrase. Obviously the private aspect, like a wedding conducted by a priest, could still use that phrase of course.

Time will tell, degradation of society always wins.

Personally, while society has a lot of issues, we seem to be on a pretty positive trajectory overall.

How is this "degradation of society"?

First its in the "language of the law"

Then its actual law..

And soon women and men that want to marry each other will be put in camps...you convinced me
