Remember, I've lived in the Deep South most of my life. There are plenty of good people there, I just don't think I ever met one who sported the stars and bars.

He is being evaluated to determine if he is competent to stand trial. How is that getting a free pass?
Moreover, it does appear to be a case of workplace violence. He was suspended from work due to a co-worker complaint, and immediately went home, retrieved a knife, and returned to work to kill the complainant.
The survivor did not state that the killing was racially-motivated. She stated that she did not think he liked white people and confronted him about it at work, which led to the altercation she reported to human resources that resulted in his being suspended.
He apparently, was also a Christian at the time of the attack, and did not convert to Islam until he was in prison awaiting trial, so reports that he uttered Arabic before the attack or that it is an incident of Islamic extremism appear to be in dispute.
If he had a publicly-available, documented history of racially-motivated or religious extremist views like Dylan Roof, and went on an unprovoked killing spree like Dylan Roof, it would be a clear cut case like Dylan Roof.

No Im not saying he got a free pass. People were saying "Why when ever a white person kills someone, do they get labeled mentally unstable."
Clearly that not the case..
As far as the rest, it was domestic terrorism and it was racially motivated. Nothing you can say will change those facts.

Sure in the short run there may be an increase. But it will have a positive effect in the long run, people who aren't hardcore racists will stop caring (at the very least their children will) and the confederate flag will be marginalised to be only a symbol of ones extreme racism and be much less ubiquitous.

I don't really know where to start with this one, there's so many different reasons why it's not related to what we said.
Okay, I guess, first we were talking about a common public reaction to mass murderers perpetrated by the media. The allegation was that a white mass murderer will be cast as a mentally unstable loner, a black one as a savage thug, and a muslim one as a terrorist. So this is solely about initial public reaction.
What we did not say is that there aren't any mentally unstable people that kill. We also didn't say that all mentally unstable killers are white and none are black. And finally we also didn't say that the judicial system can't differentiate in every case.
For these reasons, and probably more, the case you posted, is not relevant to our claim.
For all the people who are too myopic and can't see the forest for the trees:
You should learn to start looking at the bigger picture and not just at the surface of things.

I don't think that's a reasonable conclusion to draw. Obviously the American Flag is completely different to the completely racist Confederate Battle Flag (or more accurately the modern Version associated with the Confederacy).
