Superman holds back subconsciously. He doesn't kill. Thor does at times. When Superman lets loose he is capable of punching with beyond planetary weight level forces. If he knows a being can take it without dying then he would punch sufficiently harder to stop them.

I didn't mention a punching feat. A punch is really pushing force. Superman has pushed with forces above 50 earth weights and is able to move ftl. Thus he has the ability to punch very hard.

Any reasonable comic book fan understands that Thanos is CLEARLY at least a full tier above Superman and others in his class like Thor and Surfer.
