It's travel speed, that's cool but pretty useless in a hand-to-hand fight.

Don't need to. The simple fact that almost all of his rogues having super speed is enough. Do really need to show him fighting when he can run from the u.s. to Japan in a matter of seconds or read an entire library just the same? It means he'll touch goku. And a lot!
We have scans of superman using super speed greater than goku and Zod is a good character to use that you should know that superman have to use speed in Order to win. Superman just can't move fast and not be able to read those speeds he's moving at right? So he can fight fast. He smashing darksieds face in causing darksied to use the omega beam then superman taking off flying to dodge it is good fighting speeds. And you can't forget zod or even eradicator, both faster than goku!
