Not only do you not remember ANH very well, neither do you listen very well. There is no problem with ANH's opening. However, R1, like the PT changed the OT. And that bothers me.
The ANH plot was simple: Leia races home, custodian of the plans trying to save her people. What do we know: she somehow got the plans, got intercepted by the Empire near the planet that she happens to know OB1 should live on. So what does she do, while Empire is shooting up te Tantive IV: she puts the DS plans in R2 and records her 'only hope' message.
How she got over Tatooine, where exactly she got the plans or how Vader found her, we have no idea, it doesn't matter. We know all we need to know: Leia is one of the good guys trying to save her people from the evil Empire including Darth Vader. Fine, let's sit back and enjoy.
Now, almost 40 years later, R1 comes along. They invent a back story to ANH's opening we didn't need to know. And suddenly Leia's tactics after leaving the newly invented battle of Scarif (that didn't exist when ANH was made) appear rather dodgy.
Compare it to OB1, when he said in ANH that for instance Uncle Owen tried to stop Anakin from going with OB1 on a 'damn fool idealistic crusade', that was fine at the time. Anakin and Owen were obviously brothers and older brother Owen tried to stop Anakin from going away. Fine... then the PT comes along and makes ANH OB1 look like lying stupid idiot. Same effect here.
Now get your facts and my preference for SW movies straight.
