Widow and Maria served no purpose in both movies. They were just there. The movie would have turned out the same way.Where as in Buffy and Angel, each main cast served a purpose, no one was useless.
Hill wasn't a main character so she didn't need to do anything. Her purpose was to fill out SHIELD. Widow figured out they needed a new tactic and got through to Selvig, while the others focused on the invading army.

And yet I don't think Whedon would be able to pull off such series in this day & age as he did nearly 20 years ago.
If you think Avengers was too PC, then audiences would have a sugar overdose if he created Buffy or Angel in this day & age.

This is a different kind of movie, you can't compare it to a grand political thriller like Winter Soldier. A better comparison would be Captain America The First Avenger. It's a character story and a character journey. The story is told with meaning and substance that the Snyder movies don't have. Coming out of Themyscira, Diana has a clearly defined attitude in the basic goodness of everyone and everything. It's this goodness that deserves to be protected. Then the entire movie is a deconstruction of her attitude as she faces the evils of men.The end fight is a bit gimmicky but the character arc is airtight. If anything this movie reminds me of Reeves Superman
If this has a comparable character arc to Reeves' Superman or even Captain America Uno, sign me up.

She was also the one to take out mind-controlled Hawkeye and get him back on the good side. And, in AOU, she was the one keeping the Hulk on a leash, and was also the one who managed to send Hawkeye Ultron's location, while held captive, IIRC.
This was definitely the film the DCEU needed. Hopefully the growing pains are gone and we get more consistent movies like Wonder Woman going forward.
This movie still had problems but what movie doesn't. Possibly trying to do too much like previous DCEU movies have done before but not nearly as bad or immersion breaking as SS and BvS.
The action sequences for the most part were great. Good general acting minus a few spots. The story itself was done well.
This was a great step forward and like I said hope it continues.
Amazing OW number for WW! 100 plus million and DCEU 4th consecutive 100 plus in a row.
Oh, and:
I've never seen more people at an Academy screening #WonderWoman
