When he thinks he is weaker, he's truthfully analysing his own power. He reaches out to crush Sidious with all of his rage and might, but he can't even touch him. He realises then that the powers he had were like a memory, he could remember where his power was but could never use it, his connection to that power was gone. His 'furnace heart' which was the source of his power, no longer reacted to his summons, instead he was burning in that furnace.
Vader gets far more powerful than the shade of his former self that realises this, but the raw power he used to weild was just gone, he retained great power, but nothing like what he had before.
Ant has provided the quotes from the novel that make it very apparent that he was once capable of overwhelming the will of the Force itself and accomplishing things impossible for anybody else, that was burned out.

Lucas always did seem to suggest Anakin > Vader. But that's all changed under Disney. They wasted no time to have him say he's grown more powerful in the Force just a few years after ROTS, and for Pablo to confirm Rebels Vader is Prime Vader, and for OT Vader to have the most beastly telekinetic feats, and to Solo entire Rebel fleets (something Skywalker never displayed), and for Rebels Maul to confirm he can't take Vader e.t.c e.t.c
I also find it hard to believe that in the final seasons of TCW Anakin would have been shown to be the powerhouse he is in the RotS novel. By the end of Season 5 he appears barely above Dooku.

The quotes from the novel are not only Pre-Disney's soft revamp but it was right after Anakin just got all burned up.
That's like saying Maul felt weak after he just got split in 2.. Just like it took Maul years to build up his rage and become more powerful than he was previously, same thing happened with Vader.

He wasn't above Dooku during TCW tbh. But it was always a good match up.
Seriously? He's obviously referring to his lost potential. Vader goes on to become more powerful after he adjusts to the suit and calls upon his pain to grow more powerful in the dark side. Saying that Vader views his old self is weak because he was a Jedi is quite a reach. To me those quotes make it pretty obvious that Vader>Anakin

Yeah, Anakin has the potential, BUT HE NEVER REACHED IT. He gave us a glimpse of what it could be in his duel against Dooku, but that was only once. As an overall combatant, Vader is better.
