I think Ant (or DMB? Someone) pretty thoroughly disproved the idea that they were large ships. It was shown that the author uses the terms cruiser and ship classifications extremely fast and loose and several of the descriptions used in that section suggest they weren't particularly large. Such as them ducking under them and being threatened to be cut in half by a wing. Obviously the wings of a cruiser would be massive and nowhere near chest height.
