Yep, it's just silly.

In other news though, they did just clone a monkey. So we are closer to cloning humans.

A monkey or an ape? (Just checked, it is a monkey. Pretty cool shit.)

Yes. We can now ABORT away. Cause yay Cloning!!!

I guess we should stop mentioning monkeys and apes at all so that nobody will be offended, that'll solve it.

Seriously though, buying into the whole ape/monkey thing as a racist term only validates it. It's a stupid, regressive belief that ignorant assholes propagate, why buy into their shit? Black people are allowed to wear what they want even if it has a reference to a monkey on it because as we know, they are humans, not monkeys or apes.
No, obviously not, but it's getting kind of silly when it gets to the point that whenever a 'scandal' like this happens, people get death threats. Not acknowledging them makes you complicit in that side of outrage culture.

Some people are going to go too far, regardless. That doesn't take away from the add though and the sensible protest and concerns against it.

You're also mixing up the add and people buying products. The add shouldn't have been done as is (which I think is the point of protest), but if anyone wants to buy the shirt regardless of their background/race/color etc, it's their choice and theres nothing wrong with that

It was the kid's mum's choice to let him model that shirt, no?

So just consider this an extreme late term abortion then?

I have personally heard "jungle monkey" used as a racist insult towards black people. It's a southern slur. This is why it is quite obviously a very stupid advertisement.

Death threats? Man...so stupid.

I like the Youtuber's point about us not even seeing this as racist. That would be the progressive thing to do when we can see beyond old racial slurs and not see racism in everything. I highly doubt a company would purposefully put something out there like that to be racist on purpose. They are in the business of making money, obviously.

Correct.

The company shouldn't have agreed though, considering the background. The problem lies with the company/add. IMO, the mother was stupid for doing it, but I'm not calling her satan over it.

Yeah, so it was a mistake, not anything racist. The only bad thing that could possibly come from it is someone looking at it and going "by golly, I am offended by this" and nothing more. It certainly doesn't help to bolster racism in any shape or form. As opposed to the, you know, actual death threats and all that that came from the 'outrage' at the mistake.

Like I say, I think the racist comparison between black people and monkeys/apes is ****ing dumb and shouldn't be propagated by anyone. It'd be like people complaining at a scene in a film where a Jewish person takes a shower. Their minds add these two things together, and before they know it, they've created a new reason to be offended from literally nothing.

Essentially, if you see a black kid in a t-shirt that says "coolest monkey in the jungle" and think it's racist, then you're letting the racists shape the way you see the world too much.

Until we have a magical wand than can magically wave away racism, the reality is as is.

Your Jewish and taking a shower bit was really a stretch there.

Noting that something is insensitive/racism is just that. Seems like you're doing some version of the "I'm colorblind' thing and while that's nice in thought, doesn't really work in reality and ignores real world inequalities that do [unfortunately] still exist.

The Jewish/shower thing is a stretch? I wish it was, I really do. But I can see it happening in this social climate.

Well, no, if it's not being racist, then it isn't being racist. Black people are literally not monkeys, only idiots think they are, so that whole idea needs chucking out and ignoring entirely. Maybe they worried about it coming across as racist but stuck with using that kid to model it because he looked so suave. And you have to admit, that little mother****er does look suave. He does look like the coolest monkey in the jungle, a fact that has nothing to do with his skin colour.

It was a jungle themed line of hoodies. There were a bunch of kids wearing varying shirts with different jungle themed animals on them.

Stop reading so much into everything you ****ing lunatics. Not everything is a ****ing conspiracy against black people.

Holy shit I find it offensive to suggest that Black people are so emotionally crippled that a ****ing hoodie advertisement with a black kid wearing a shirt with the word monkey on it in a lineup of other kids wearing other jungle animal themed shirts is something that's going to impede them in their daily lives.

I have a higher opinion of black people than thinking I need to coddle them as if they're children.

Black people are not literally *insert racial term here*, same goes with Jews, Asians, Hispanics etc and all ocean of corresponding racial insults that go along. So again, you're "just ignore the racist" is good in thought, but really fails in reality.

I certainly don't blame people for finding that add to be problematic.

This is pretty much the entire issue summed up. Well, before the death threats started, anyway. It's ridiculous. Taking things out of context to find a reason to cry racism. It's starting to become more and more a "cried wolf" situation, which is very dangerous when dealing with something like racism.

Btw your sig and avi combo is giving me cancer my friend

It's just utterly ridiculous. People need to get over it. It's a hoodie lol. It can't hurt you unless you let it.

Apparently, a term that is not exclusively racist, i.e. it has a non-racist meaning when not used in a racist context, is not a racial slur.

By that reasoning, "n****r" is not a racial slur either, because it can also mean, "an ignorant person," in the exceedingly rare instance it is not being used to disparage black people.

One was created as a racist slur; one was not.

And in the case of this shirt fiasco, one wasn't even used as a racist slur. People just took a photo out of context and claimed it was racist, because why the hell not.

I love it 😂
