😆
I'm kind of digging it. Ennis was limited to his stock "Evil corporation"understanding of big business, while whoever adapted the show seems like he has an insiders view of the layers of dirt and excess. If you can only write well what you know, this scribe's known some messed up things during his career.
The book was more of a satire of the comic book industry and all of the dumb shit they've done over the decades.
But yeah, Ennis's real wheelhouse is war and war history. That's why he was so great at writing The Punisher, because he understands better than most how someone could lose their soul and become a killing machine like Frank.

Sounds like the perfect way to improve on the source material 👆
Not how I'd put it, I definitely liked the source.
I can see how the "anti-cape" excess can be a turnoff, but that's kind of Ennis's stamp on all his work. And everything else is usually top notch, like the characters and their relationships with each other. That's one thing the show DIDN'T capture well... Wee Hughie alone is much more sympathetic and relatable to me then the show character, Butcher is more then just a bloodthirsty avenger, Mothers Milk is MUCH more likeable, Frenchie and Milk don't have some sort of stupid rivalry.
In other words, Ennis knows how to write comrades properly, something many people do not, because they've never experienced such close knit ties in their lives and would never trust someone as closely and completely as Ennis had to in his days of war.

Ennis has never been in the military.
Ennis has never been anything but a skinnyfat comic book writer since he was 19. And it's not that the "anti-cape" elements are excessive, it's that they are shallow and stupid. Making superheroes that are frauds and fakes doesn't work as a satire of superheroes that actually are competent and save people in the stories he is criticizing. The only similarities the Seven have with the superheroes Ennis is lampooning are surface level. He's the Seltzer and Friedberg of superhero satire.
^ You see, I might have taken that post seriously even if I didn't agree with it until you made the Seltzer & Friedberg comparison.
I think The Boys is actually one of his weaker works, but he's clearly a talented writer. Nobody could write Hitman or Fury: My War Gone By or Battlefields if they were a S&F level hack.
I think a lot of middle ages comics fans get butthurt because Ennis doesn't have any particular affection for Marvel or DC characters and does his own thing.
