Maximizing liberty is a liberal belief. You're committing the "No True Scotsman Fallacy." From a political science definition, the liberty to own and use firearms is a liberal position. Indeed, in highly oppressive states, you find dictatorships that restrict gun liberties which makes them less liberal. A more liberal state would allow the people more liberty - a liberal right to own and bear arms.
Think of a "liberal" position as a position that grants "maximum individual liberty." But liberals differ, generally, from anarchists in that individual liberty is balanced between maintaining society vs. maximizing liberty.
