it would be an alteration from the book, but one which would make sense. rabban is ordered to squeeze arakis and then he just f*cks off from the story for the most part. remember even his death was barely mentioned. it was as if even frank herbert became bored with him after he served his purpose.
If that's the case then it will have to have a bigger opposition with the Jesuit witch and the Emperor, unless they brought in new characters in part 2?
Visually, it was awesome.
Main problem, if you don't know any of the lore, I can see where it can be kinda confusing at times and off putting as they rush through the politics of the universe. Only touching on the Bene Gesserit, the Empire, the Houses and how it's all tied together. Should have made it three hours and spent that extra 30 or so mins on world and character building. I suspect the director's cut will fix this.
Bautista who I generally like seemed very one dimensional and wasted in his few scenes. That's probably just the character though.
I found myself cheering more for Jason Momoa than I did Josh Brolin, which surprised me.
Will be watching it again in the theaters.

I know absolutely nothing about Dune lore, but the previews I've seen for this looked great, so I was planning on watching it later today with the wife(who also knows nothing about the franchise.) Do you reckon it will still be an enjoyable watch?
It's enough for you to follow the basics, but likely not enough to make you care much. Hopefully I'm way off here.
I watched it at home with a bunch of people talking and me having to explain some backstory, so it's possible there was more and I just missed it due to distractions.
Why I want to see it in the theater, also I want to help this make enough $$$ that part 2 is a definite and isn't budget-gutted by a scared studio.
Edit: Yeah, still watch it. Ideally you come back and tell me I'm wrong and the world just sucked you in.

You’re both American right? How you guys watching it? Is there a good torrent out already?
Quality rips are available on pretty much every noteworthy torrent site, if you're interested in 'acquiring' it that way.
Saw it on the big screen tonight. It's difficult to be visually spectacular these days without having a stylistic element but this certainly manages it. If it doesn't win cinematography awards it'll be daylight robbery.
The score is equally epic but it suffers from the same problem as a lot of Nolan's recent films...Namely the sound mix is detrimental to the dialogue which isn't good when there's a fair chunk of fast whispering stuff during Paul's visions.
Anyway, despite the fact that I have almost zero knowledge of the source material I still enjoyed it immensely. Unfortunately it won't be a financial success because it's just too conceptual for audiences these days. Most people will come away with the same opinions they did with Blade Runner 2049, Raised by Wolves, Annihilation etc. Cold, unengaged and generally missing the themes and points.
