as for the movie itself, It looks good and Joaquin Phoenix could be up there with Heath Ledger.

Yeah, it'll be close. Since this is solely on the joker, I think Phoenix might get the edge.

I was thinking the same. Dudes voice throws in hints of Joker and he actually sounds good (he's already miles ahead of Leto). I'm looking forward to the full transformation. I'm assuming there will eventually be more to it than dyed hair, makeup, and some bullying. Some legit shocking tragedies have to be involved in his eventual psychotic break so I'm hoping for a gradual descent into madness for the character all culminating into a confrontation with Batman. I actually like the idea just because we've never seen Joker have an actual character arc into who he is. There's almost never an origin (outside of being comedian who gets in with criminals and falls into a vat of waste, which this looks to adapt), so this could be interesting.

I'm in the same boat as many who never had any interest in a Joker standalone but I like Phoenix enough as an actor to give this a shot.

EDIT: I'm good with the Norman Bates angle with his mom. I didn't expect Joker to have a normal relationship with his family after all, and her being sexually abusive but loving is more drastic and weird than the usual abusive household take for psychos.

And disregard the stuff about Batman. Unless there's a timeskip, best we'll get is Joker shooting his parents if they go that 1989 angle.

I bet it plot twists into Joker making the whole thing up.

Pretty well defined at this point Joker doesn't even remember his own past, so suspicious they're giving him a definitive past.

Talk about deluded. No one will match Heath’s greatness. Phoenix look like a ridiculous rodeo clown.

Joker is overrated as a character to begin with.

Go troll someone else, Dickhead.

The only one trolling is you since you’re derailing the thread and not even on topic. No need to get so emotional.

Joker is an overrated villain compared to the likes of others. Everyone rides on the coattails of Heath, but imitation is the sad symphony of the inundated. This movie reeks of desperation.

Joker is one of the best villains in comics. But to each their own.

Comics are a different medium from cinema, and at times the translation doesn’t fit well. Just look at recent renditions. Sure, Joker had his time in the sun (as all others have), but when it comes down to complexity Joker is sorely lacking.

Other villains fit much easier into the cinematic landscape than Joker.

I actually dont like to read joker comics, since much of if is uninspired. I'm more into the cinematic (Jack N. And Heath) and cartoons (Batman TAS). Those are my favorite joker stories. Hes just so compelling on the big screen.

So you just basically disagreed and contradicted yourself.

Nice to know you’re on the fringe about all things Joker.

It's weird. I dont like to read about certain characters, but I enjoy some of them on the big screen. Some villains are just more compelling on the big screen.

And I meant pop culture, not comics. My bad.

I've never liked The Joker. He's never been interesting to me. A psychopath that that thinks it's funny to kill people? Nowadays that's just called an ...hole with a gun. This is the first time I've seen a portrayal of him that makes me think he might be an interesting character.

Joker in the comics is a prep/scientific genius that rivals or surpasses the likes of Lex Luthor and Batman. Hes not a common street level character anymore.

Joker has rarely been interesting.

Snyder's stories showed an intimidating Joker. One of my favs.

Wonder if they're going to be doing The Dark Knight Returns's moment where Joker is on the talk show..where we see him on stage in that teaser trailer.

Kinda reminds me of Taxi Driver.

This movie's being marketed as an American psychological thriller about a man slowly being driven insane.

The script's inspired by Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Raging Bull & The King Of Comedy.

The main interest is really just seeing the actor have fun with the performance. Mainly Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger to this point.

Phoenix is a great actor, too, so hopefully that element will be intact.

One fan theory based on the age difference between Phoenix's character & apparently the young kid (Bruce Wayne?) he forces to smile is that Phoenix isn't the real Joker but is the influence to the real deal as the story progresses...
